Manohar Lal Khattar was born on May 5, 1954, into a Punjabi Hindu family in Nindana village, Meham tehsil, Rohtak district, East Punjab. Harbans Lal Khattar, his father, had moved to the village from the Jhang district of West Punjab after India’s partition in 1947. His family first settled in the Rohtak district’s Banyani village and began farming.
Khattar graduated from Rohtak’s Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government College with a matriculation degree. After that, he relocated to Delhi and opened a shop near Sadar Bazar. while studying at Delhi University for his bachelor’s degree.
In 1977, Khattar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and three years later became a full-time pracharak. He is a lifetime bachelor as a pracharak. He spent 14 years as a full-time pracharak before joining the BJP in 1994. Khattar served as the BJP’s Organizational General Secretary in Haryana from 2000 to 2014. For the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, he was the Chairman of the BJP’s Haryana Election Campaign Committee. He was then elected to the BJP’s National Executive Committee.
In the 2014 Haryana Legislative Assembly election, Khattar was nominated as the BJP’s candidate from the Karnal constituency. Staff and members of the party in Karnal launched a petition drive, urging the party’s leadership to field a district candidate instead of him.
Deepender Singh Hooda, the Indian National Congress candidate, accused Khattar of being a “outsider” who was not a Karnal native. However, the Modi wave aided Mr. Khatter in his election victory.
The BJP secured a majority in Haryana for the first time in the polls, and Khattar won his first election by a margin of 63,736 votes. During a party meeting, Haryana BJP President Ram Bilas Sharma suggested his name for Chief Minister of Haryana, which was seconded by another powerful Chief Minister of Haryana claimant Rao Inderjeet Singh and backed by a large number of MLAs. After his swearing-in ceremony on October 26, 2014, he became the BJP’s first Chief Minister of Haryana.
After forming an alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party following the 2019 Haryana Legislative Assembly election, Khattar was sworn in as Chief Minister for the second time on October 27, 2019.
