After that, he became a TV and radio actor and comic in Los Angeles and then New York. Before relocating to the United States, he gained fame as a part of the ‘Saturday Night Live cast, performing in multiple episodes.

Short then established himself as a popular stand-up comedian and host of his own talk shows. Following this epiphany by a few years, Short went on to star in films like “Three Amigos,” “Innerspace,” and two “Father of the Bride” sequels. The first child of Charles Patrick Short and Olive Grace was born on March 26, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; he was named Martin Hayter Short. His mother was a music teacher, while his father worked for a steel company when he was a child. Besides himself, he was the oldest of four sons, and one of a daughter.

Martin Short’s mother encouraged him to pursue his talents as an actor, mimic, and entertainer, and he did so from a young age. He went to Westdale Secondary School in his hometown of Hamilton.

Martin Short earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from McMaster University in 1971. This was a tough time for him because he had lately lost both of his parents. His mother passed away from cancer before she completed high school, and two years later, both his father and his paternal grandfather passed away. Martin Short planned to pursue a career in social work after earning his degree in the field. When he was cast in the 1971 stage production of “Godspell,” just a year after graduating from high school, he finally got his big break. After befriending some famous actors, he got a role in the play “Fortune and Men’s Eyes” the next year.

Both Martin Short’s first film, 1986’s “Three Amigos,” and his second, 1987’s “Innerspace,” became cult classics. Among the many films he has been in over the years, his portrayal in the critically panned “Father of the Bride” stands out. Short’s previous experience included lending his voice to cartoon characters in movies.

In 1993, Martin Short made his Broadway return in a performance of “The Goodbye Girl.” After the success of his roles in “Little Me” and “The Producers,” Short went on to appear in other highly acclaimed productions. In 2004, Martin Short’s Jiminy Glick in Leawood was released. Short both wrote and acted in the film. ‘The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause’ premiered two years later, marking his return to theaters (2001).

In 2010, he was contacted by the producers of “Damages,” an FX drama starring Martin Short as attorney Leonard Winstone. He shared the screen with Glenn Close in the production. Martin lost his older brother David in a car crash when he was 12 years old, making him the youngest of five children. His mother Olive, a concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and a young violin prodigy herself, died of cancer when he was 17 years old. The loss shattered him to pieces. A further two years passed until it was finally Charles’ turn to do the same. He had escaped Ireland during the War of Irish Independence and settled in North America, where he eventually got a job in a steel company.

Rather than bringing Martin down or making him melancholy, the tragic events spurred him on to enjoy life to the fullest.  “I’ve resolved to treat my life like a celebration instead of a chore.”

The talented comic didn’t decide to make comedy his life’s work until much later in life, after being exposed to the work of comedians like Stan Laurel, Harpo Marx, Jerry Lewis, and Dick Van Dyke. He began his time at McMaster University in the pre-med program but eventually switched to social work. He also had a successful acting career, having acted in many plays throughout his time at university.

In a Godspell production in Toronto in 1972, Martin shared the stage with Victor Garber, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, and Dave Thomas. Martin’s future wife, the comedic actress Nancy Dolman, was really filling in for his ex, Gilda Radner. They started going out in 1974, and by 1980 they were married. Their children were all born between 1983 and 1990: Katherine in 1983, Oliver in 1989, and Henry in 1990.

Martin left Canada in 1979 and settled in New York, where she appeared in the short-lived television series The Associates and the comedy I’m a Big Girl Now. After being convinced by his Godspell co-stars Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas, he joined the legendary improv troupe The Second City in 1977.

His comedic skills were first seen by a wider audience in the early 1980s when his group debuted a television show called SCTV (Second City Television), which ran for several years and was critically acclaimed. Many of his well-known characters were developed at this time, including Ed Grimley (a talk show host and Wheel of Fortune fan based on Canadian interviewer Brian Linehan), Jackie Rogers Jr. (an albino comedian), Troy Soren (a current events analyst), and Jiminy Glick.

These characters became even more well-known once he brought them to Saturday Night Live in the 1984–1985 season, helping the show recover from Eddie Murphy’s departure. An expert mimic, Martin became well-known on the show for his spot-on portrayals of Jerry Lewis and Katharine Hepburn.
