Mehbooba Mufti (born 22 May 1959) is an Indian politician who served as the last Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir as a State from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She is a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mufti was detained without charge at first after the state’s special status (autonomy) was revoked in August 2019, and then under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was only released in October 2020, after the government was challenged by the Supreme Court of India about the duration of her detention.


Mufti was the first woman to serve as the state’s Chief Minister.In Jammu and Kashmir, she formed a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After the BJP withdrew from the alliance in June 2018, she resigned.

 

Mufti is the president of the PDP and served in the Indian parliament as a member of the 16th Lok Sabha, representing Anantnag, before being sworn in as the Chief Minister of J&K. She also served in the 14th Lok Sabha, representing Anantnag from 2004 to 2009.

She was born in 1959 in Akhran Nowpora, the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Gulshan Ara. She graduated from the Government College for Women in Jammu with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a law degree from the University of Kashmir. [eight] [nine] She moved to N. Her father had returned to the Congress after leaving in 1987, enraged by the party’s alliance with the state’s traditional competitor, the National Conference. Mehbooba made a name for herself as the assembly’s leader of the opposition, taking on Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s government with zeal.

She resigned her assembly seat and stood for parliamentary office in Srinagar in 1999, where she was defeated by incumbent member Omar Abdullah. When assembly elections were held again in 2002, she won the Pahalgam seat in the state assembly from South Kashmir, beating Rafi Ahmed Mir. In 2004 and 2014, she was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Anantnag constituency.  In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she defeated incumbent MP Mirza Mehboob Beg.


After her father died in January 2016, while leading the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, she continued the alliance with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), making it the second time the BJP and the PDP had formed a government in the state.

 

She was sworn in as the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on April 4, 2016.She won an Assembly seat in Anantnag in a by-election on June 25, 2016, with the largest margin in any recent election there, and has since concentrated on resettling Rohingyas.She ran for the Anantnag seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections again, but was defeated by Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference.The central government detained her on August 5, 2019.On the 46th day of her mother’s incarceration, her daughter Iltija Mufti took over her mother’s Twitter account.Iltija Mufti wrote a letter to the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner in November demanding that her mother be moved to a location better prepared for the valley’s winter.She was detained again in February 2020 under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.

 

On October 13, 2020, she was released.

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, was detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police on November 25, 2020, and was not permitted to visit Pulwama in South Kashmir to meet the family of senior PDP leader Waheed Parra, who was arrested by the National Investigating Agency earlier this week.Iltija Mufti, Mufti’s daughter, has also been put under house arrest, according to Mufti.
