Minister Kamaraj is a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) political party in India. He has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly since 2011, representing the Nannilam constituency, and is the Tamil Nadu Government’s Minister for Food. Prior to becoming a member of the state assembly, he served in the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament, where he represented Tamil Nadu.
In the 2011 state assembly elections, Kamaraj was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as an AIADMK candidate from the Nannilam constituency.
Kamaraja was born on June 25, 1960, in Mannargudi. He holds a master’s degree and is the father of two daughters.
K. Kamaraj attended Nayanar Vidyalaya for his primary education before enrolling at Kshatriya Vidyalaya, which served as a high school at the time. His father died within a year of his enrollment at Kshatriya Vidyalaya, and as there was no other earning participant in the home, her mother sold all of her jewels and lived off the interest from the money received.
At the age of twelve, he wanted to drop out of school. He then went to work in his maternal uncle’s fabric store. The Jallianwala Baug massacre had an effect on him, and he wanted to join India’s freedom struggle. He used to take time off from working in his uncle’s shop to engage in processions and public meetings. He started working for Congress full-time at the age of 16. He was an influential participant in the C. Rajagopalachari-led Dandi march. He was imprisoned several times for opposing British rule.
Kamaraj was chosen by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to succeed Budhichandhiran as Minister for Food in the Government of Tamil Nadu in November 2011, the third cabinet reshuffle in a five-month period.
Kamaraj was named Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments as well as Minister of Food in January 2015. P. Chendur Pandian, who was seriously ill, was relieved of this extra responsibility.
Kamaraj was one of three AIADMK ministers included in a First Information Report filed by police in April 2017 after charges of obstructing officials performing income tax raids. He and Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan were accused of doing so at the home of C. Vijayabhaskar, the Minister of Health. The Supreme Court of India chastised the Tamil Nadu government for failing to investigate a land scam case in which Kamaraj was allegedly involved the next month.
