Narendra Singh Tomar is a member of the Indian Parliament’s 17th Lok Sabha. In the second Modi government, he serves as Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Minister of Rural Development, and Minister of Food Processing Industries.
He formerly served in the Indian government as the Minister of Mines and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s leadership. He was also a member of the Sixteenth Lok Sabha from Gwalior from 2014 to 2019. He switched constituencies in 2019 and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Morena.
Tomar was born on June 12, 1957, to Munshi Singh Tomar and Sharda Devi Tomar in Morar village, Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh. Jiwaji University was his alma mater. He has two sons and a daughter with his wife, Kiran Tomar. Babulal Gaur gave him the nickname Munna Bhaiya.
On May 27, 2014, he was appointed Union Minister of Steel, Mines, Labour, and Jobs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet. On May 26, 2014, President of India Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office and swore him.
On July 5, 2016, after the Narendra Modi ministry’s second cabinet reshuffle, Birender Singh took over as Steel Minister from Narendra Singh Tomar, and Narendra Singh Tomar took over as Minister of Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, and Drinking Water and Sanitation from Birender Singh. Minister of Mines Piyush Goyal took over from Narendra Singh Tomar.
He was given charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in May 2019, after continuing with the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. After Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the post, Tomar was given the additional charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries on September 18, 2020.
