Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian politician who currently serves as the country’s Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. She has been a member of the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house, since 2014. Sitharaman previously served as India’s Defence Minister, making her the country’s second female defense minister and, after Indira Gandhi, the country’s second female finance minister, and first full-time female Finance Minister.
Nirmala Sitharaman was born on August 18, 1959, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. She received her education in Madras and Tiruchirappalli. In 1980, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in Tiruchirapalli, as well as a Master of Arts in economics and an M.Phil. in economics. In 1984, he graduated from Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University. She then began work on a Ph.D. in Economics with a concentration on Indo-European trade, but she was unable to complete the degree due to a relocation to London after her husband was awarded a scholarship at the London School of Economics.
Sitharaman met her husband Parakala Prabhakar, an Andhra Pradesh native while studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Nirmala was a BJP fan, but her husband came from a Congress family. They have a daughter and married in 1986. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, used Prabhakar as a media adviser.
Sitharaman joined the BJP in 2006 and was appointed the party’s spokesperson in 2010. She was appointed as a junior minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet in 2014, and she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in June 2014.
She was one of the 12 candidates selected by the BJP in May 2016 to run in the Rajya Sabha elections on June 11, 2016. Her seat in Karnataka was successfully contested. During her second Budget speech in February 2020, Sitharaman made a contentious statement, claiming that the Indus script-hieroglyphs had been deciphered and that guilds of the Saraswati-Sindhu civilization and the Harappan seals, which date from 3300 BCE, were remarkable.
She was appointed Minister of Defence on September 3, 2017, making her only the second woman after Indira Gandhi to hold the position, but the first full-time female defense minister.
Nirmala Sitharaman was appointed Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs on May 31, 2019. She has the distinction of becoming India’s first full-time female finance minister. On July 5, 2019, she delivered her first budget to the Indian parliament. On February 1, 2020, Sitharaman announced the Union Budget for the years 2020–21. She was placed in charge of the COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force during the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
Nirmala Sitharaman worked as a salesperson at Habitat, a home furnishings store on Regent Street in London. She worked for the Agricultural Engineers Association in the United Kingdom as an advisor to an economist. She has also worked as a Senior Manager (R&D) for PWC and briefly at the BBC World Service during her time in the UK. She has also sat on the National Commission for Women as a delegate. She was a founding director of Pranava in Hyderabad in 2017.
