P Gopichand is a retired badminton player from India. He is currently the India national badminton team’s Chief National Coach. In 2001, he became the second Indian after Prakash Padukone to win the All England Open Badminton Championships.

Pullela Gopichand was born in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on November 16, 1973, to Pullela Subash Chandra and Pullela Subbaravamma. He tried to play cricket at first, but his older brother persuaded him to pursue badminton instead. For a time, his family lived in Nizamabad. He attended St. Paul’s High School in Hyderabad for his education. He studied public administration at A. V. College in Hyderabad. In 1990 and 1991, he captained the Indian combined universities badminton team.

On June 5, 2002, Pullela married fellow badminton player P. V. V. Lakshmi. Gayathri, their daughter, and a son, are their children.

S. M. Arif was Pullela’s mentor until Prakash Padukone admitted him into the Prakash Padukone academy. He also offered training at the SAI Bangalore under Ganguly Prasad. Pullela won the National Badminton Championship for the first time in 1996, and went on to win it five more times until 2000. At the Indian national games in Imphal in 1998, he won two gold medals and one silver.

He represented India in three Thomas Cup tournaments at the international level. He took gold in the SAARC badminton tournament in Vijayawada in 1996 and defended his title in the following games in Colombo in 1997. He took silver in the team event and bronze in the men’s singles event at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

In 1999, he won both the Toulouse open championship and the Scottish open championship in France and Scotland, respectively. In the same year, he won the Asian satellite tournament in Hyderabad, but lost in the final match of the German grand prix championship.

He won the All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham in 2001. In the semi-finals, he beat then-world number one Peter Gade before beating Chen Hong of China to win the title. After Prakash Padukone, who won in 1980, he became the second Indian to win.

Pullela established the Gopichand Badminton Academy in 2008 after retirement from playing and allegedly mortgaging his home. A famous industrialist, Nimmagadda Prasad, donated $50 million on the condition that India win a gold in badminton at the Olympics. Saina Nehwal, P. V. Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, Parupalli Kashyap, Srikanth Kidambi, Arundhati Pantawane, Gurusai Datt, and Arun Vishnu are among the badminton players who have come out of the academy.

P. V. Sindhu won the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships. Saina Nehwal won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Pullela was also the official Indian Olympic Badminton Team coach at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
