P K Sinha is the 31st Cabinet Secretary of India, is a 1977 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He was born on 18 July 1955, in Delhi, India. The name of his parents is not known. Sinha has a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in economics. He also has a master’s degree in philosophy.
Sinha has held key positions in both the Indian and Uttar Pradesh governments, including Principal Secretary (Irrigation), Commissioner of Varanasi Division, Investment Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, additional CEO of Greater Noida, additional resident commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, district magistrate and collector of Agra and Jaunpur districts, and Secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
In February 2012, the prime minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) named Sinha as Union Shipping Secretary; he assumed office on February 1, 2012, and demitted it on June 30, 2013.
The ACC named Sinha as India’s Cabinet Secretary on May 29, 2015. He took over from Ajit Seth. He worked in the Cabinet Secretariat as an officer of special duty (OSD) in the role of secretary until Seth’s retirement, officially taking over as Cabinet Secretary on June 13, 2015.
Following the end of Raghuram Rajan’s tenure in September 2016, the union government formed a selection committee led by Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha to shortlist candidates for the Reserve Bank of India governorship. With effect from September 4, 2016, Urjit Patel was appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Sinha was given a one-year extension as Cabinet Secretary on April 25, 2017. In May 2018, the ACC granted Sinha another one-year extension. Sinha was highly respected as one of India’s most influential people during his time as Cabinet Secretary.
