She is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal and the first Indian woman to win a Badminton World Championship. In April 2017, she reached a career-high world ranking of no. 2 for the first time.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu was born in Hyderabad, India, on July 5, 1995. P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya were his parents. Both of her parents have played at the national level in volleyball. Ramana, who was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won a bronze medal at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contributions to the sport.

Pusarla is a Telangana native who lives in Hyderabad. She attended St. Ann’s College for Women in Hyderabad and Auxilium High School in Hyderabad. Despite the fact that her parents were both successful volleyball players, Pusarla preferred badminton over volleyball because she was inspired by Pullela Gopichand, 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion. She began playing badminton when she was eight years old.

Pusarla first learned the fundamentals of the sport on the badminton courts of the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad, where he was trained by Mehboob Ali. She joined Pullela Gopichand’s Gopichand Badminton Academy soon after.

Pusarla debuted on the world stage when he was only 14 years old. At the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo, she earned a bronze medal. She took silver in the singles division at the 2010 Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge. Pusarla advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 BWF World Junior Championships in Mexico, where she was beaten in a three-game series by Chinese Suo Di.

Pusarla then went on to compete in Srinagar’s 77th Senior National Badminton Championships. Sayali Gokhale beat her in the finals. Pusarla fractured her knee in the China Open, and she continued to play through the Japan Open and the nationals with the injury. To avoid aggravating her condition, she chose to miss the World Junior Championships. Pusarla came in second place at the Syed Modi India Grand Prix Gold event in Lucknow in December 2012, losing in three games to Lindaweni Fanetri.

She was seeded fifth at the World Championships. In the first two rounds of the tournament, she beat Pai Yu-po and Zhang Beiwen in straight sets. With her win over Tai Tzu-ying, she wowed everybody. She beat Tai 12–21, 23–21, 21–19 in the semi-finals after coming back from a game down 12–21, 23–21, 21–19. She beat Chen Yufei in straight sets in the semi-final to advance to her third World Championships final in a row. She defeated Nozomi Okuhara in the final 21–7, 21–7. She became the first Indian to win gold at the championships in the process.

Despite her World Tour ranking of 15, she earned a wild card entry into the 2019 BWF World Tour Finals as a result of her World Title victory in August. She played in the World Tour Finals in Guangzhou as the defending champion, but she was eliminated in the first round after falling to Chen Yufei (1–2) and Akane Yamaguchi (1–2).

Pusarla reached her first final in over 18 months at the Swiss Open, but lost demoralizingly to Carolina Marn, falling 12–21, 5–21, owing to her failure to equal Marin’s pace and precision. She was then beaten in straight games in the semifinals of the All England Open by Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand.
