When Peter was a year old, his family moved to the United States and settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where his father worked as a chemical engineer. Klaus then worked at different mining companies, giving Thiel and his younger brother, Patrick Michael Thiel, an itinerant upbringing. Thiel’s mother became a citizen of the United States, but his father did not.

The Thiels lived in South Africa and southwest Africa before settling in Foster City, California in 1977. Peter attended seven different elementary schools. In Swakopmund, he attended a strict institution that required students to wear uniforms and used corporal punishment, such as striking students’ hands with a ruler. This experience instilled in him a dislike for uniformity and regimentation, which manifested itself later in his support for individualism and libertarianism.

Thiel played Dungeons & Dragons, was an avid reader of science fiction, with Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein among his favorite authors, and a fan of J. R. R. While attending Bowditch Middle School in Foster City, Thiel mastered mathematics and placed first in a California-wide mathematics competition. At San Mateo High School, he read Ayn Rand, admired then-President Ronald Reagan’s optimism and anti-communism, and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1985.

He attended Stanford University and mastered philosophy. At the time, there were ongoing debates about identity politics and political correctness. Thiel practiced law for Judge James Larry Edmondson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit after graduating from Stanford Law School. Thiel then worked for Sullivan & Cromwell in New York as a securities lawyer. After seven months and three days, he left the law firm, based on the lack of transcendental value in his work. He then went to work for Credit Suisse as a currency options derivatives trader. He attended them in 1993 while also working as a speechwriter for former US Secretary of Education William Bennett, before returning to California in 1996 in search of a more meaningful job.

When Thiel returned to the Bay Area, he observed that the advancement of the internet and the personal computer had triggered the dot-com boom.
