A native of Springfield, Kentucky, Simms entered the world on November 3, 1954. As of 2018, he was 64 years old. He was born in Springfield, Kentucky, at what is now known as Maple Hill Manor in Washington County, on the farm of his grandpa, Phil Simms. His family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, while he was in primary school.

His ancestors include the late Oliver “Doc” Kuhn of Vanderbilt, as well as the late John Simms “Shipwreck” Kelly, the former Kentucky quarterback.

During his senior season, Simms completed 92 of 173 throws for a completion rate of 53.2% with six touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and 1,229 yards for the Morehead State Eagles’ ball-control offence.

Bill Walsh and Sam Wyche flew to Morehead State ahead of the 1979 NFL Draft so that they could work out Simms. So impressed by Simms that Bill Walsh wanted to choose him in the third round, preferring him above Notre Dame’s Joe Montana. Many expected the New York Giants to pass on Simms, but they did, selecting him seventh overall in the first round.
