Prakash Raj was born on March 26, 1965, in Bangalore, India, to a Tulu father and a Kannada mother. Prasad Raj, his brother, is also an actor. He attended St. Joseph’s Indian High School before enrolling at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bangalore. On the advice of influential Tamil film director K. Balachander, Prakash Raj changed his surname to Raj. In his home state of Karnataka, he is now known as Prakash Rai.

Harakeya Kuri, directed by K. S. L. Swamy and starring Vishnuvardhan, was his breakout role.

He had previously worked with Vishnuvardhan in Mithileya Seetheyaru, Muthina Haara, and Nishkarsha. Prakash’s performance was observed by Geetha, the film’s lead heroine, who introduced him to her mentor, Tamil director K. Balachander. In Kannada films, he was known as “Prakash Rai,” and K. Balachander gave him the name “Prakash Raj” for his debut Tamil film Duet, in which he played his first major role.

Prakash returned to Kannada films in 1997 with T. S. Nagabharana’s Nagamandala, which was selected for the Indian Panorama at the International Film Festival in 1997. He also performed in Mani Ratnam’s stage production Netru, Indru, Naalai. He appeared in Mani Ratnam’s biopic Iruvar in 1997. M. G. Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi’s relationship was the subject of the film, for which he received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
