Prannoy Lal Roy is an Indian journalist and psychologist, co-founder, and executive co-chair of New Delhi Television (NDTV). He was awarded the Red Ink Award by the Mumbai Press Club for his lifetime achievement for his continuous and pioneering contribution to news television and his journalism service in 2015.


Prannoy Lal Roy Biography:

Prannoy Roy was born on 15 October 1949 in West Bengal, India, to an Irish mother and a Bengali Hindu father. His father’s name is P L (‘Hurricane’) Roy, who was a collector during the British Raj in India. Hurricane Roy also worked for Genelec. He attended La Martiniere Calcutta and the Doon School in Dehradun. He was later awarded a scholarship to Haileybury and Imperial Service College in the UK for his A-levels and trained as a British Chartered Accountant, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (England and Wales), and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.

Roy studied at Queen Mary University in London, where he graduated with First Class Honors. Roy started his academic career in order to pursue a Ph.D. from the Delhi School of Economics. His academic rewards consist of the Leverhulme Trust (UK) Fellowship, the Queen Mary Prize for Performance at BSc and the OPOS Scholarship at the Doon School for Studies at Haileybury College, and the Chartered Accounting at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1979-83.


His paternal grandfather, Paresh Lal Roy, was named as the ‘Father of Indian Boxing.’ Paresh Lal Roy’s younger brother Indra Lal Roy was the first Indian Ace, the first Indian pilot of the Royal Flying Corps in World War I.

Roy married his school mate, Radhika Roy, and they had a daughter, Tara Roy. They are the parents of the filmmaker Shonali Bose.

Career:

Roy has been a consultant at Price Waterhouse in India for a couple of years. He is a Television and digital reporter in India, author, and professional British Chartered Accountant and Economist. He has been the pioneer in the election coverage and budget specials for the Indian national TV network Doordarshan and the BBC World News Question Time India.

In 1988, Roy, along with his wife journalist Radhika, set up a TV production company called New Delhi Television. Roy began his career with televised coverage of the Indian general election. On Doordarshan, he hosted the news programs “The News Tonight” and “The World This Week” (which have been nominated as one of India’s top five television programs since independence). He also launched India’s first 24-hour English news channel NDTV 24×7.

He was an Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Finance of the Indian Government and an Associate Professor at the Delhi School of Economics, where he developed a macro-econometric forecasting model for the Indian economy. He was also a consultant for the Indian division of the multinational accounting company PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In 2009, Roy was one of two Indians on the International Advisory Council for Foreign Affairs in Washington, D.C.

He co-authored A Compendium of Indian Elections and Indian Decisions: Elections 1952–1991 with David Butler.

Controversies:

In 1998 the CBI registered a criminal conspiracy case against NDTV managing director Roy, accusing fraud in the upgrade of Doordarshan. In July 2013, Roy and NDTV were acquitted by the courts and found not guilty of all charges involving cases brought against Roy by the CBI under Section 120-B of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) for massive fraud and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

NDTV is alleged to have breached Indian tax and corporate laws through its overseas subsidiaries. These claims have been refuted by NDTV.

The Sunday Guardian wrote a report that revealed the financial misdeeds and misconducts of NDTV in collusion with ICICI Bank. It details how NDTV’s major stakeholders raised funds through a misstatement of the value of the shares in NDTV. NDTV refuted the allegations and the CEO of NDTV reacted to the Sunday Guardian with the threat of “criminal defamation” On 5 June 2017, NIA and CBI raided the House of Prannoy Roy.

On 19 November 2015, ED informed NDTV of 2,030 crores (US$280 million) of alleged infringements under the FEMA Act, although the company argued that the allegations were not “legally tenable”.

The Income Tax Appeal Tribunal (ITAT) has accepted the revenue tax department’s finding that NDTV entrepreneurs used their own shell companies to make a round-trip investment of $642 million ($90 million) in the period 2009-10, making them liable for tax collection and penalties.

In September 2018, Roy and his wife Radhika were notified by SEBI of infringements of insider trading laws, despite the fact that their company, NDTV, had downplayed the notices stating that they were seeking legal advice on the matter. Earlier that year, in the month of March, SEBI was fined Rs 3 lac for disclosure lapses.

In August 2019, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a fresh case against Prannoy Roy, his wife Radhika Roy, and former NDTV CEO Vikram Chandra for breaking the FDI rules and routing unidentified public servants’ money via shell companies.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India banned Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy from entering the securities market for 2 years after the inquiry found that they had concealed material details from the shareholders about the loan agreements and were ineligible to hold management positions on the NDTV board.
