Prem Singh Tamang is the new Chief Minister of Sikkim, as well as the patriarch and founder of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). He was a core member of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party before joining the party.


Tamang was born on February 5, 1968, in Sikkim. The name of his parents is Kalu Singh Tamang and Dhan Maya Tamang. He is from West Sikkim’s Singling Busty. In 1988, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Darjeeling Government College.

He went on to serve as a teacher in a state-run school after graduation. His uncle, politician Aditya Tamang, represents Soreng-Chakung in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. He was named a graduate teacher in the Government of Sikkim’s HRD Department in 1990 and served until 1993.

He retired from government service and began engaging in SDF civic activities as a result of his active involvement in social work and politics. In 1994, he was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly as the SDF candidate in the Soreng-Chakung constituency in West Sikkim. He was State Youth Convenor and Vice President of the SDF party during his time there.

He served in the Sikkim government for three terms in a row as a minister. Minister of Animal Husbandry, Ecclesiastical, and Industrial Department from 1994 to 1999. Minister of Industries and Animal Husbandry from 1999 to 2004. From 2004 to 2009, he served as the Minister of Housing and Construction.

He was nominated as the Chairperson of the Industries Department in 2009 after winning an election in the Burtuk Constituency. He did not, though, serve as chairperson. He was elected as MLA from Burtuk Constituency in 2014 after forming his party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

After being arrested on 28 December 2016 for misappropriating government funds while with the SDF between 1994 and 1999, he was removed from the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on 13 January 2017. He became the largest opposition leader in Sikkim in 2017, when he was elected president of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha. On the day of his release after his arrest, on August 10, 2018, a huge crowd gathered, the largest ever for any political event in Sikkim.


In the 2019 assembly elections, Golay led the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha to victory, winning 17 of the 32 seats in the legislative assembly, ending the 24-year rule of the Pawan Kumar Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front. On May 24, 2019, SKM spokesperson Jacob Khaling said Golay would lead the state government, but constitutional experts say his conviction under the Preve Act is invalid.
