Prithviraj Sukumaran is an Indian film actor, director, producer, playback singer, and distributor who is best known for his work in Malayalam cinema. He has also appeared in films in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu. He has appeared in over 100 films in various roles and has received numerous awards, which include a National Film Award, three Kerala State Film Awards, a Tamil Nadu State Film Award, and a Filmfare Awards South.
Prithviraj Sukumaran Biography:
Prithviraj Sukumaran was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, on October 16, 1982. His father’s name is Sukumaran and his mother’s name is Mallika Sukumaran. He attended Shrine Vailankanni Senior Secondary School in T. Nagar, Chennai, and St. Joseph’s Boys School, Coonoor when his family was settled in Tamil Nadu. When his family relocated to Kerala, he enrolled in the NSS Public School in Perunthanni.
He then moved to St. Mary’s Residential Central School, Poojappura where he acted in plays and skits for the school’s Annual Day Celebrations. He finished his education at Sainik School, Kazhakootam, and Bhavan’s Senior Secondary School, Kodunganoor. While in school, he also competed in and won several debates and elocution contests. Prithviraj received the title of “Mr. LA Fest” in the Annual Inter-School arts festival hosted by Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram in successive years and is the only person to date to win that title twice.
Following high school, he attended the University of Tasmania in Australia to pursue a bachelor’s degree in information technology. During this time, he auditioned for film director Ranjith and was cast as the lead in Nandanam. Ranjith was introduced to him by film director Fazil. His older brother, Indrajith Sukumaran, and sister-in-law, Poornima Indrajith, are both actors.
On April 25, 2011, Prithviraj married BBC India reporter Supriya Menon in a personal ceremony in Palakkad. The couple is blessed with a daughter, who was born in 2014. His family lives in Kochi’s Thevara district.
Career:
In 2002, he made his acting debut in Ranjith’s romantic drama Nandanam, which was a commercial success. In the years that followed, he established himself as a talented leading man. In 2006, he featured in Classmates, a coming-of-age romance biopic that became the greatest-grossing Malayalam film ever at the time. In the same year, he received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his work in Vaasthavam, making him the award’s youngest recipient at the age of 24.
He appeared as a musician in the Tamil romantic comedy Mozhi in 2007. His debut as a playback singer in the 2009 action film Puthiya Mukham. In 2012, he was nominated for another Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his work in the medical drama Ayalum Njanum Thammil and the biographical film Celluloid.
In 2010, he started co-producing movies for August Cinema, beginning with the historical drama Urumi, in which he also featured. In 2011, he co-produced and played the lead in the social drama Indian Rupee, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Malayalam Feature Film and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film. For his performance in Kaaviya Thalaivan, he received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Villain in 2014.
Ennu Ninte Moideen, his 2015 period film, and Ezra, his 2017 horror-thriller, are both among the top ten highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time. In 2017, he parted ways with August Cinema and founded Prithviraj Productions, an independent production company that will make its debut with the 2019 science fiction film 9. In 2019, Prithviraj made his directorial debut with Lucifer, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
Prithviraj Sukumaran founded August Cinema in 2012 with cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan and businessman Shaji Nadesan. Arya, an actor, joined the production company in 2015. However, he announced on his Facebook page in 2017 that he is leaving the company. In March 2018, Prithviraj announced the formation of Prithviraj Productions, an independent production company.
