Rajendra Prasad is an Indian actor who primarily appears in Telugu movies. He has received four Nandi Awards from the state of Andhra Pradesh, three SIIMA Awards, and three Santosham Film Awards.

Prasad was born on 19 July 1956 in Nimmakuru, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, to Gadde Venkata Narayana and Manikyamba. His father worked as a schoolteacher. Prasad received a diploma in Ceramic Engineering before seeking a career in the film industry. He started working for a firm, but he had to leave because he was too young. After watching the filming of Tatamma Kala, he decided to pursue a career in the industry and enrolled in an acting school on the advice of N.T.R and N. Trivikrama Rao.

Vijaya Chamundeswari is Prasad’s wife. They have two children: a son and a daughter.

Prasad debuted in 1977 with Sneham and rose to prominence with Manchu Pallaki (1982). Rendu Rellu Aaru (1986), Ladies Tailor (1986), Aha Naa-Pellanta! (1987), Appula Appa Rao (1991), and Mayalodu (1991) were among his many successful comedy films (1993). Erra Mandaram (1991) and Aa Naluguru (1992) won him the Nandi Award for Best Actor (2004). Andhra University has also awarded him an honorary doctorate. He received the Royal Reel Award at the Canada International Film Festival in 2012 for his role in the medical thriller Dream.

Prasad made his acting debut in the film Sneham (1977), directed by Bapu. He began his career as a dubbing artist and went on to play a variety of supporting roles. He had a supporting role in Krishna’s film Ramarajyamlo Bheemaraju, which led to him being cast in 14 films.

Director Vamsy chose him to play the lead role in his film Preminchu Pelladu. With Vamsy’s Ladies Tailor, he rose to prominence. He continued to play supporting roles in addition to leading roles. He appeared in over 200 Telugu films and a few Tamil films during his 35-year career. Prasad has been dubbed the “King of Comedy” and “Natakireeti” in Andhra Pradesh, where he was born.

In Aha Naa Pellanta, he collaborated with director Jandhyala and became an instant sensation. He also worked with directors Vamsy, E. V. V. Satyanarayana, S. V. Krishna Reddy, and Relangi Narasimha Rao to great success. Relangi worked with Prasad on 32 films (out of 70) as a producer. One of his most well-known roles was in the film Aa Naluguru, for which he received the State Nandi Award for the second time in his career. His critically acclaimed films Mee Sreyobhilashi and Onamalu established him as one of Telugu cinema’s most promising actors. In the multi-starrer blockbuster Devullu, he played Lord Hanuman.


Prasad starred in the English-language film Fast Gun Murugun in 2009. The film was shown at the London Film Festival, the Los Angeles Indian Film Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival, and the New York Museum of Modern Art.

In films like Julai, Aagadu, S/O Satyamurthy, Srimanthudu, and Nannaku Prematho, he played remarkable roles as a supporting actor, as well as elderly characters in films like Dagudumoota Dandakore.

Prasad’s films were so successful and had such an influence on at least two generations of Telugu people that when they emigrated abroad, they would take them with them. P. V. Narasimha Rao, the then-prime minister, was also a great fan of Prasad. He was elected President of the Movie Artist Association (MAA) in 2015, defeating actress Jayasudha.
