Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is a former Indian Army officer and politician from India. Rathore is a Member of Parliament from Jaipur Rural in the 17th Lok Sabha. Until May 2019, he was the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of India.

He won 25 international medals for Double Trap Shooting at numerous championships, including a silver medal in the Men’s Double Trap event at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Rathore represented as a commissioned officer in the Indian Army’s Grenadiers regiment before retiring as a colonel in 2013. Following his retirement from the army and shooting, he was elected to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s parliament in 2014.

He was appointed Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting in November 2014. In 2017, Rathore was selected as a Cabinet minister with independent responsibility for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Rathore was born on January 29, 1970, in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. His father’s name is Colonel Lakshman Singh Rathore (Retd) and his mother’s name is Manju Rathore.

His educational qualifications include a B.A., an Instructor-Weapons (MMG, AGL, Small Arms) Course, and a Grading Tactics (YO) Course. He attended the National Defence Academy in Pune and the Infantry School in Mhow.

On February 16, 1997, he married Gayatri Rathore, a doctor in the Indian Army. The couple is blessed with two children: a son and a daughter.

Military Career:

Rathore is a graduate of the 77th course of the National Defence Academy.  Rathore attended the Indian Military Academy after graduating from the NDA, where he was awarded the Sword of Honor for being the best all-around Gentleman Cadet. He also received the Sikh Regiment Gold Medal, which is given to the best athlete on the course.

On December 15, 1990, he was commissioned into the 9th Grenadiers (Mewar) Regiment. On December 15, 1992, he was elevated to lieutenant, and on December 15, 1995, he was promoted to captain. Rathore participated in the Kargil War and was promoted to major on December 15, 2000. He served in Jammu and Kashmir as part of his Indian Army career, where he took part in counter-terrorist operations. For exemplary service, his regiment received the Army Chief’s Citation as well as the Governor of J&K’s Citation. On December 16, 2004, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, and on May 1, 2009, he was promoted to colonel.

Rathore won a gold medal and set a new Commonwealth Games record of 192 targets out of 200 at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Along with Moraad Ali Khan, he also won the Team Gold Medal. Rathore went on to properly defend his Commonwealth Champion title by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. He also took silver in the team event alongside Vikram Bhatnagar. He won gold medals in two World Shooting Championships, in 2004 in Sydney and 2006 in Cairo.

Rathore gained prominence after winning silver in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. It was India’s first Olympic individual silver medal.

Rathore won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Spain in 2006, an event for the world’s top 12 shooters. For the majority of 2003 and 2004, he was ranked third in the world, briefly rising to first in early 2004 and second after the Athens Olympics. After nearly 40 years, he won a silver medal for India at the World Championships in Sydney in 2003. Since Karni Singh of Bikaner won Silver at the 1962 World Shooting Championship in Cairo, India had not had a victory. Rathore is credited with four consecutive Asian Clay Target Gold Medals from 2003 to 2006. He also has an individual bronze medal from the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

Between 2002 and 2006, he won 25 International Medals for Double Trap at different championships.

Rathore won gold at the Asian Clay Target Championship in Kuala Lumpur in 2011. In that tournament, his score of 194 equaled the world record.

Political Career:

Rathore joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on September 10, 2013, after retiring from the Indian Army. He was elected as an MP to the Lok Sabha from the Jaipur Rural constituency in 2014. He was appointed in as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting under the Narendra Modi government on November 9, 2014. On September 3, 2017, he was appointed Minister of Sports. He was appointed Minister of State (I/C) for Information and Broadcasting in May 2018.
