Ramesh Chennithala is an Indian politician who has served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly since 2016. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. In the Kerala government, he served as the state’s Home Minister.
Ramesh was born on May 25, 1956, in Chennithala, Mavelikara, Kerala, India, to Hindu Nair parents V. Ramakrishnan Nair and Devakiamma. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Economics and a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B). He has a wife named Anita. Rohit Chennithala and Ramit Chennithala are their two sons. Ramit Chennithala cleared the Civil Service exam with a 210th rank, while Rohit Chennithala is a doctor.
Ramesh Chennithala has been involved in politics since he was in elementary school. In 1970, he was elected Secretary of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) Chennithala HS Unit. Following that, he served as Mavelikkara Taluk General Secretary in 1971, SU Alappuzha District Treasurer in 1972, Alappuzha District Secretary in 1973, KSU State Executive Member in 1975, KSU State Vice President in 1978, and finally KSU State President in 1980.
In 1982, he was elected as the All-India President of the National Students Union of India, and later that year, he was elected to the Haripad Constituency as a Member of Legislative Assembly. He became the General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress (I) in 1985 and, at the age of 28, was appointed as the youngest Minister (Rural Development) in the Ministry of K. Karunakaran in 1986. He became the President of the Kerala Pradesh Youth Congress (I) in 1986, and he was re-elected as an MLA from the Haripad Constituency in 1987.
In 1989, he was elected to Parliament from the Kottayam Parliamentary Constituency, and in 1990, he was elected National President of the Indian Youth Congress (I).
He was re-elected to Parliament in 1991, 1996, and 1999. During his term, he was lauded for his fiery speeches in Hindi and English. In 2001, he was appointed Secretary of the AICC with independent charge of seven states, and in 2002, he was appointed Secretary of the AICC with independent charge of five states. He was elected to the Congress Working Committee, the highest body of the Indian National Congress, in 2004. (CWC).
He has served on many committees, including the Consultative Committee for Commerce, the Labour and Welfare Committee, the Central Committee for Mahatma Gandhi’s 125th Birth Anniversary, the Central Committee for Subhash Chandra Bose’s Birth Centenary, the Finance Committee-Lok Sabha, the H.R.D. Standing Committee, the Public Accounts Committee, the Coir Board, the Civil Aviation Consultative Committee, and the Joint Parliamentary Committee. KPCC President, AICC Secretary, Indian Youth Congress National President, and President- Pradesh Youth Congress (I) Kerala are among the other significant positions held.
He returned to state politics in 2005, becoming the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. He was re-elected as MLA from Haripad Constituency for the third time in 2011. He was sworn in as Kerala’s Home Minister in 2014. His “Operation Kubera” initiative aimed to put an end to the state’s reign of illicit money lenders. The goal of the “Clean Campus, Healthy Campus” project was to eradicate drug use on campus.
To express his views on the CAA, leader of the opposition Ramesh Chennithala shared the dais with Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at a joint anti-CAA protest organized by the ruling CPM-led LDF. He said he has filed a petition challenging the Act, which drew criticism from then-KPCC President Mullappally Ramachandran. The protest against CAA and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), according to KPCC vice-president V. D. Satheesan, was “a struggle for a common cause.”
