Ravi Shankar Prasad is an Indian lawyer and politician who currently serves as the Union Minister for Law and Justice, Electronics and Information Technology and Communications. Prasad represents the Patna Sahib constituency for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Ravi Shankar Prasad was born on 30 August 1954 in Patna, Bihar. Thakur Prasad, his father, was a senior advocate at the Patna High Court and one of the founding members of the Jan Sangh, the forerunner to the Bharatiya Janata Party. His niece, Anuradha Prasad, is the owner of BAG Films and Media Ltd and a former congress spokesperson. She is the wife of Mr. Rajeev Shukla.

Prasad has a son and a daughter and graduated from Patna University with a BA Hons, MA (Political Science), and LL.B. Since 1980, Prasad has been a lawyer at the Patna High Court. In 1999, he was appointed Senior Advocate at the Patna High Court, and in 2000, he was appointed Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India.

Prasad married Maya Shankar, a historian, and professor of history at Patna University, on February 3, 1982.

Prasad appeared in the Ram Janmabhoomi Ayodhya conflict on behalf of the lord ‘Ram Lalla.’ He has represented former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani in a number of high-profile cases, including the Narmada Bachao Andolan, T. N. Thirumulpad environmental cases, and the abolition of the Bihar Assembly, among others.

In the 1970s, Prasad started his political career as a student leader organizing demonstrations against Indira Gandhi’s government, and he was also imprisoned when Gandhi’s government instituted the emergency in 1975. He was an active volunteer with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and worked in the student movement in Bihar under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan (ABVP). He was a long-time member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the ABVP, holding numerous positions in both organizations.

He was Assistant General Secretary of the Patna University Students Union and a member of the University’s Senate, Finance Committee, Arts, and Law Faculties during his college years. Prasad has worked with the BJP’s youth wing and the principal party body at the national level. Prasad has been a member of the BJP National Executive, the party’s highest policymaking body, since 1995. He recently led the party’s campaign in the Uttarakhand Assembly Elections.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s Minister of Power and Mines, has intensified the reform process in the mining and coal industries. He drafted a bill to reform the Representation of People Act within a fortnight after taking over the Ministry of Law and Justice (State) in July 2002. In 2003, he was named Minister of Media and Broadcasting, where he was in charge of implementing reforms in radio, television, and animation to increase the quality and efficiency of these industries. He was instrumental in establishing Goa as the home of India’s International Film Festival. He also headed the Indian delegation to the Cannes, Venice, and London film festivals.

He headed the Indian delegation to the ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Durban, South Africa, in April 2002. Later, as part of a Non-Aligned delegation, he visited Yasser Arafat in Ramallah to demonstrate solidarity with him. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, he headed the Indian delegation to the Commonwealth Law Minister Summit. He also led the Indian delegation to the Cannes, Venice, and London film festivals. Prasad filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Patna High Court, demanding that the CBI investigate the Fodder Scam.

He helped the Public Sector Unit, BSNL, which he has praised as a strategic asset, in competing with private sector Service Providers as Minister for Communication. He assured Parliament that the government needs BSNL to succeed for the good of the poor, adding that the organization represents even the most isolated rural areas and is the first to respond to disasters and emergencies. He has designated Alawalpur, in Patna’s Fatuha block, as a model village for development under the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana.
