American actor, singer, musician, director, producer, author, composer, and educator Robin David Segal is better known by his stage name, “Robby Benson.” He has worked in a variety of fields, including education. He made his acting debut in the television show ‘Broadway.’ He is arguably best known for providing the voice of ‘the Beast’ in the Disney animated picture ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1991). He has had academic appointments at other colleges in the United States. At ‘Indiana University in Bloomington, he was a professor of telecommunications from 2013 to 2016. Benson had a heart valve issue detected him as a teenager. As a result, he needed to have four open heart operations in 1984. Benson wrote and starred in the musical “Open Heart,” performed “off-Broadway” in 2004, drawing inspiration from this event.

Benson has also written a medical memoir titled ‘I’m Not Dead…Yet’ (2012) and a best-selling book titled ‘Who Stole the Funny?’ (2007). Both of these works have been published. During 1971 and 1972, he played a young character in the daytime soap opera ‘Search for Tomorrow.’ The program aired from 1951 through 1986, spanning 35 years. In the film “Jory,” released in 1972, Benson played the part of a young man coming of age. The following year, in 1973, ‘Jeremy’ was released. In each movie, he had the starring role of the protagonist.

In 1975, he had roles in the films ‘Death Be Not Proud’ and ‘Lucky Lady.’ In the same year, he participated in a screen test for the part of “Luke Skywalker” in “Star Wars,” but he was not cast in the role. Mark Hamill was the one who received it in the end. Benson had a starring role in the 1976 film ‘Ode to Billy Joe.’ The actor was cast as “Billy Joe McAllister,” a figure responsible for his own death by leaping from a bridge. In 1977, he had a starring role in the sports drama ‘One on One,’ which he had also collaborated with his father to write. Additionally, in the same year, he had a role in a television movie called “The Death of Richie.”

Benson appeared in the 1978 film “Ice Castles” with Lynn Holly Johnson, who won a medal in the United States national figure skating competition. For the sake of the film, the actor received skating instructions. Die Laughing was an Orion feature film he featured in with Linda Grovenor in 1980. Benson also played in the movie “Tribute,” which stars Jack Lemmon, released the same year. In 2006, he was honored with the nomination for the “Distinguished Teaching Award” bestowed by New York University. He got this honor.
