Robert Duvall is an American actor best known for his 1983 drama picture ‘Tender Mercies,’ for which he earned an ‘Academy Award.’ Among his honors is the 2005 ‘National Medal of Arts.’ He began his acting career in the late 1950s in theatre before moving on to television and film roles.

Robert Selden Duvall was born in San Diego, California, USA, on 5 January 1931, to William Howard Duvall and Mildred Virginia. While his father was a Virginia-born admiral of the United States Navy, his mother was a self-taught actress. He is descended from English, German, Swiss-German, French Huguenot, Welsh, and Scots. He was raised in the Christian Science faith.


He attended ‘Severn School.’ In 1953, he graduated from ‘The Principia’ high school at St. Louis, Missouri, and afterward enrolled in ‘Principia College’ in Illinois.

 

He studied in New York’s ‘Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater’ from 1955 to 1957, where he was mentored by Sanford Meisner. He met Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman there.

Apart from acting training, he worked odd jobs to support himself. He worked as a clerk in a Manhattan post office, as a clerical assistant at ‘Macy’s,’ and as a truck driver.He portrayed a pilot in ‘Laughter in the Stars,’ a stage rendition of ‘The Little Prince.’

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served for one year until 1954. He performed in an amateur production of the comedy ‘Room Duty’ during his military service.

In 1955, following his discharge from the military, he returned to theatre and was cast in a variety of roles. Among the roles he played were ‘Eddie Davis’ in Ronald Alexander’s ‘Time Out For Ginger,’ ‘Hal Carter’ in William Inge’s ‘Picnic,’ ‘Charles Wilder’ in John Willard’s ‘The Cat And The Canary,’ ‘Paris’ in Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible,’ and ‘John the Witchboy’ in William Berney and Howard Richardson’s ‘Dark Of The Moon.

This rising talent appeared in a number of theatre performances in 1956, including Frederick Knott’s ‘Dial M For Murder,’ Inge’s ‘Bus Stop,’ and John van Druten’s ‘I Am A Camera.’

His acting abilities garnered him widespread popularity and several other parts. In 1957, he portrayed ‘Mr. Mayher’ in Agatha Christie’s ‘Witness For The Prosecution,’ ‘Hector’ in Jean Anouilh’s ‘Thieves’ Carnival,’ and ‘Eddie Carbone’ in Arthur Miller’s ‘A View from the Bridge.’

He made his television debut in 1959 as a guest star on ‘Armstrong Circle Theater,’ in an episode titled ‘The Jailbreak.’ He also appeared on various television shows as a regular guest star, including ‘Naked City,’ ‘The Untouchables,’ ‘Route 66,’ ‘The Twilight Zone,’ ‘The Outer Limits,’ and ‘The Fugitive.’
