Sarbananda Sonowal is the current Chief Minister of Assam. He previously served as the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in the Government of India. In 2016, he was appointed Chief Minister of Assam.

He was appointed to the 16th Lok Sabha as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency in Assam. He previously served as the president of the BJP Assam and is a member of the party’s National Executive Committee. From 1992 to 1999, Sonowal was the president of the All Assam Students Union. He was a member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) political party until January 2011, when he decided to switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Sarbananda Sonowal Biography:

Sarbananda Sonowal was born on October 31, 1962, in Muluk Gaon, Dibrugarh district, Assam, to Jibeswar and Dineswari Sonowal. He finished his BA(Hons) in English from Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College, which is affiliated with Dibrugarh University, and his LLB from Gauhati University.

Career:

From 1992 to 1999, Sarbananda Sonowal served as President of Assam’s oldest student organization, the All Assam Students Union. Following that, he joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He was elected MLA from Assam’s Moran constituency in 2001. In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Dibrugarh constituency, where he remained until 2009 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2011.

In the 2014 general election for Lok Sabha, he was selected by the Bharatiya Janata Party to head the State’s 16th Lok Sabha Elections Assam, and in the same year, he was also appointed as Member of Parliament, 16th Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur Constituency. He was then selected as Union Minister of State-Independent Charge, of the Government of India under the Modi Government at the center. On May 26, 2014, the President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, administered the oath to Shri Sarbananda Sonowal as Minister of State (Independent Charge) at a Swearing-in Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

He was chosen as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for the 2016 Assam Assembly Election. Sarbananda Sonowal won the Assembly Election from Majuli Constituency on May 19, 2016, becoming the next Chief Minister of Assam from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Biography:

Sarbananda Sonowal retired from all executive positions within the AGP and left the party due to displeasure with and among the party’s senior leadership, who were attempting to form an alliance with a party opposed to the repeal of the contentious IMDT Act. Sonowal joined the BJP on February 8, 2011, in the presence of then-BJP National President Nitin Gadkari and senior leaders such as Varun Gandhi, Vijay Goel, Bijoya Chakravarty, and state BJP president Ranjit Dutta. Prior to his current assignment as the state’s new president, he was immediately selected to be part of the BJP National Executive and later as the State Spokesperson of the BJP unit. Sarbananda Sonowal was announced as the BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate for Assam by the BJP Parliamentary Board on January 28, 2016. He is unmarried.

During his tenure, the Guwahati International Film Festival was established.
