Son Hyun-woo is better known as Shownu, his stage name. He is a singer and dancer from South Korea. He is the main dancer and vocalist in the South Korean boy band Monsta X, which premiered in 2015 through Mnet’s survival show, No. Mercy, under Starship Entertainment.


Shownu Biography:

Shownu was born on June 18, 1992,  in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Shownu was a JYP Entertainment trainee for about two years after winning first place in the JYP auditions in 2009. He auditioned for JYP Entertainment as it is the label of the singer Rain who motivated Shownu to become an idol. Despite receiving praise from the company for his powerful dancing, Shownu left, citing conflicts with the company and a sense of stagnation.

Shownu remained active in the idol industry, working as a backup dancer for Lee Hyori and promoting with her, as well as appearing in her music videos, “Bad Girls” and “Going Crazy.” He also appeared in D-“Talk Unit’s to My Face” and Bestie’s “Pitapat” music videos.

After auditioning and signing with Starship Entertainment, he became a member of the Nu Boyz project, alongside future Monsta X members Jooheon and Wonho, as well as #Gun.

He competed in Mnet’s survival reality show, No. Mercy, in December 2014. He then made his debut in the hip-hop boy group Monsta X in 2015, along with six other contestants.

Shownu made his debut as Monsta X’s leader and main dancer on May 14, 2015, with the EP Trespass.

Shownu has made numerous solo appearances on variety and reality shows since his debut, including being a regular character for two seasons of Lipstick Prince, which landed him a commercial film after winning the show, as well as appearing as a contestant on King of Mask Singer in 2018 as “Okey Donkey” and guesting on more than ten variety shows. Shownu has received praise for the variety of entertainment he provides in his appearances, as well as his overall ability as an entertainer. Shownu also appeared in Sistar’s music video for “Shake It.”

Along with being Monsta X’s main dancer, he also contributes to the group’s choreography and has been admired by fellow choreographers for his abilities. He has created choreography for songs including Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side,” Richard Parker’s “Psychic,” Charlie Puth’s “LA Girls,” Trevor Daniel’s “Falling,” and The Weeknd’s “Heartless.” Shownu also choreographed Bruno Mars’s “Versace on the Floor” and Monsta X’s “Mirror,” both of which were performed on their respective world tours.

Shownu made his first solo appearance in a magazine for InStyle Korea in June 2016.

2018-present: Solo work and television and magazine appearances:

Shownu also worked with Hwang So-Yoon of Se So Neon on the British band PREP’s lead single “Don’t Look Back” for their upcoming album in 2018. Shownu approached PREP for collaboration because he was a fan of the band. He appeared in magazines with former member Wonho in January for Nylon Korea, August for GQ Korea, and October for Dazed Korea promoting Under Armour. In February, he made a solo appearance in the Taiwanese magazine Bella.

In August of this year, he appeared in another magazine with Wonho, this time for Elle Korea, where they were promoting Tom Ford’s latest perfume line. He also graced the cover of BEAUTY+ in October and will do so again in November 2020.

Shownu is praised as a writer and composer on three Monsta X tracks from their sixth studio album, All About Luv, including “Who Do U Love? (feat. French Montana),” “Middle of the Night,” and “Beside U (feat. Pitbull).” He also co-wrote “Someone’s Someone” with members of Before You Exit.


Shownu injured his back in 2020, prior to the release of Monsta X’s eighth EP Fantasia X, and the group delayed their comeback by two weeks to permit Shownu time to recover properly. Shownu had to undergo emergency left eye retinal detachment surgery prior to Monsta X’s live-streamed concert “Live From Seoul with Luv,” which was scheduled for July 25, and the concert was rescheduled for August 8 to allow him time to recover. He appeared in magazines with Monsta X members so many times in 2020, including Harper’s Bazaar Korea in May with Minhyuk and Joohoney, W Korea in June with Kihyun, and Esquire Korea in November with Joohoney.

In August, it was revealed that he would appear on the soundtrack for She’s My Type, alongside groupmate Minhyuk, marking his first soundtrack appearance since 2011. The song, “Have a Goodnight,” was released on September 11th. On October 15, Shownu released “I’ll Be There,” a rock-style song for Story of the Nine Tailed’s soundtrack.

In September, he adorned the cover of Cosmopolitan Korea’s 20th-anniversary issue, which sold out almost immediately.

In October, he had a solo feature in Dazed Korea for the Monsta X Dazed Project, GQ Korea to generate a fashion film promoting Under Armour, and 1st Look Magazine Korea to promote Moschino Toy Boy perfume. Following the publication of the magazine, Moschino perfume’s Toy 2 sold out on Olive Young’s online mall and ranked first in the perfume brand ranking. Following the main event’s success, Shownu was chosen as the first Korean muse for Italian luxury fashion brand Moschino perfume.

Shownu debuted as a judge on Mnet’s Cap-Teen, a survival reality show, in November.

Shownu appeared in Elle Korea in March 2021 to promote Moschino Toy 2 Bubble Gum perfume. He also promoted the Brooks Sports shoe and clothing line in Dazed Korea. Shownu was chosen as the cover model for the first issue of “Y Magazine” Korea, along with Monsta X member Lee Min-hyuk (singer, born 1993). Shownu was welcomed to the Dolce & Gabbana store grand opening in Seoul, Korea.

Shownu was cast as a character in the Netflix series Goedam 2 in March 2021.

Shownu revealed in May that he would be leaving Monsta X and would not be promoting their upcoming ninth EP due to health issues related to his eye retinal detachment.
