A.C.T. Lee, aka Shelton Jackson Lee (born March 20, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.), is an American filmmaker noted for his confrontational and uncompromising style when dealing with contentious issues.

He grew up in a middle-class Brooklyn community as the son of jazz composer Bill Lee.  He graduated with honors. Lee enrolled in the Graduate Film School at New York University in 1978 and met Ernest Dickerson, the cinematographer with whom he would work on numerous projects together in the years to come. His master’s thesis, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, received him the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student Award for the relevance of the barbershop in the Black community, as he explained at the time.

The picture that made Lee’s name was 1986’s She’s Gotta Have It, a character study of a modern Black woman’s love life. Lee not only wrote, produced, directed, and edited the film, but he also played a crucial supporting role, establishing a pattern that would last for the rest of his career. The picture was hailed as “Godardesque” at the Cannes film festival despite its modest $175,000 budget. School Daze (1988) was a scatological parody of racism, snobbery, and betrayal in the Black academic world, based on his experiences at Morehouse.

Do the Right Thing, Lee’s third film was inspired by the infamous Howard Beach incident (1986), in which a Black man in Queens, New York, was chased and killed by rampaging white youths. The film was passionate but evenhanded, placing no blame on any particular group for racial violence or absolving any of its perpetrators. The majority of his later films addressed head-on problems including interracial relationships in Jungle Fever (1991) and the diversity of views within the Black community in getting on the Bus (1996).

Many of Lee’s later works garnered mixed reviews, with the notable exception being his landmark historical picture Malcolm X (1992). The length of his films was attacked by some, while ethnic stereotypes were criticized by others, such as the Jewish characters in Mo’ Better Blues (1990) and the Italian Americans in Summer of Sam (1999), and the treatment of his female characters were critiqued by still others.

When asked about Hollywood’s anti-black bias, Lee pointed out that despite receiving nominations for Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and his moving documentary 4 Little Girls (1997), which dealt with the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, he had yet to take home the gold statuette.

He Got Game (1998), a family drama that serves as both an exposé of college basketball recruitment methods and a love letter to the game, was one of Lee’s later works, as was 25th Hour (2002), which tells the story of a convicted drug dealer’s final day of freedom (played by Edward Norton). Movies such as Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster starrer Inside Man (2006), which follows police discussions with thieves while they are holding hostages, and mysteries like Miracle at St. Anna (2008), which follows African-American servicemen during World War II.

For the drama Red Hook Summer, Lee returned to Brooklyn, which had served as the scene for several of his previous works (2012). According to a Japanese manga, Oldboy (2013) was a brutal revenge story (which had previously been adapted as a South Korean film). Ganja & Hess, a 1973 horror film, served as the inspiration for Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2014).

In Chi-Raq (2015), loosely based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata (411 BCE), in which the women of warring city-states Athens and Sparta refuse sexual contact until the Peloponnesian War is over, the epidemic of gang violence in Chicago in the early 21st century is examined through comedy, music, and spoken verse. The movie was Amazon Studios’ debut release. Contrary to popular opinion, the film was widely praised for its unique look at the racial and social disparity, as well as gang culture and sexuality.

Lee’s first movie, She’s Gotta Have It, was made into a Netflix series in 2017. As she unabashedly navigates her art career and her relationships with three men, Nola Darling finds herself in 21st-century Brooklyn. The show was discontinued in 2019. The next year, Lee made the satirical film BlacKkKlansman (2018), which is based on the memoir of a Black Colorado Springs, Colorado, a police officer who infiltrated the local Ku Klux Klan group in the 1970s.

Lee returned to race relations issues in this film. As a result of the film’s critical acclaim as a cutting commentary on the country’s persistent racial tensions, Lee earned his first Academy Award for best-adapted screenplay. A group of Vietnam soldiers returns to Southeast Asia to retrieve the remains of their squad leader and locate the wealth they concealed years ago in his upcoming film Da 5 types of blood (2020). Though billed as an action-adventure film, the film actually delves into topics of civil rights and African American history. The film version of David Byrne’s American Utopia, which he directed, debuted on HBO in 2020 as well.

The Original Kings of Comedy (2000) featured African American stand-up comedians; When the Levees Broke (2006) was a four-part HBO documentary series about the United States government’s insufficient response to Hurricane Katrina. Lee has continued to create factual films.

Afterward, he directed the documentary series NYC Epicenters 9/11–20211/2 (2021), which explores New York City’s response to 9/11 and the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition to Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth (2012), Lee directed various music videos and the Broadway musical of the former heavyweight boxing champion.

The Lee family has been prominent in many of his films, including She’s Gotta Have It, Mo’ Better Blues, and others. Lee’s sister Joie has also had significant roles in several of Lee’s films, while David Charles Lee, Lee’s younger brother, was the still photographer for several more.
