Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is an Indian politician. He is has served as the Indian government’s Minister of External Affairs since May 31, 2019. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been representing Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha since 5 July 2019.

S Jaishankar was born on born 9 January 1955 in New Delhi, India, to K. Subrahmanyam and Sulochana, a prominent Indian strategic relations consultant, columnist, and civil servant. He is the younger brother of historian Sanjay Subrahmanyam and former Indian Rural Development Secretary S. Vijay Kumar.


He attended The Air Force School in Subroto Park, New Delhi, and is a graduate of the University of Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College. He graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with an MA in Political Science, an M.Phil., and a Ph.D. in International Relations, where he specialized in nuclear diplomacy.

Jaishankar is married to Kyoko, a Japanese native, and the couple has two sons, Dhruva and Arjun, as well as a daughter, Medha. He can talk in Russian, English, Tamil, Hindi, Japanese, and Hungarian.

From 1979 to 1981, Jaishankar worked in the Indian Foreign Service as third secretary and second secretary in the Indian mission to the Soviet Union in Moscow, where he learned Russian. He returned to New Delhi and served as a special assistant to diplomat Gopalaswami Parthasarathy and as an undersecretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs’ Americas division, where he dealt with the United States.

He was a member of the team that worked to settle a controversy over the supply of US nuclear fuel to India’s Tarapur power plants. He worked as the first secretary at the Indian embassy in Washington, D.C. from 1985 to 1988.

He served as the Indian Peacekeeping Force’s First Secretary and political advisor in Sri Lanka from 1988 to 1990. (IPKF). He served as Counsellor (Commercial) at the Indian mission in Budapest from 1990 to 1993. After returning to New Delhi, he worked as the Ministry of External Affairs Director (East Europe) and as the press secretary and speechwriter for President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma.


From 1996 to 2000, Jaishankar served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo. Following India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests, Indo-Japanese relations deteriorated but recovered following a visit to India by then-Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori. According to reports, Jaishankar assisted in the introduction of future Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Manmohan Singh, his Indian counterpart. He was appointed India’s ambassador to the Czech Republic in 2000.

Jaishankar worked as a Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi from 2004 to 2007. He was active in negotiating the US-India civil nuclear agreement and enhancing defence co-operation in this capacity, including during relief operations after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Jaishankar was also involved in the 2005 New Defense Framework and the Open Skies Agreement, as well as the establishment of the US-India Energy Dialogue, India-US Economic Dialogue, and the India-US CEO’s Forum.

During the 123 Agreement talks with the United States in 2006–2007, Jaishankar headed the Indian delegation. In June 2007, he also represented India at the Carnegie Endowment International Nonproliferation Conference.

On January 29, 2015, Jaishankar was announced as India’s Foreign Secretary. Following a meeting of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 28, 2015, his appointment was announced. Nepalese observers credit Jaishankar with being the “initial planner of the 2015 Nepal blockade.”

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat state on 5 July 2019 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In his first term, he succeeded late Sushma Swaraj, who was the External Affairs Minister in Narendra Modi’s administration. Sushma Swaraj did not run for office due to health concerns.

In October 2020, Jaishankar and India’s defence minister, Rajnath Singh, met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper to join the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement on Geospatial Cooperation (BECA), which allows for the sharing of sensitive information and intelligence, including access to highly accurate nautical, aeronautical, topographical, and other geospatial data.
