Sunil Arora is India’s new Chief Election Commissioner and the country’s 23rd. He also serves as the president of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB). He is a retired Rajasthan cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1980 batch. He has worked for the Indian government as a secretary in two ministries.


Sunil Arora was born on 13 April 1956, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India. His father is a retired Indian Railways accounts officer, and his mother worked at DAV College in Hoshiarpur. One of his two brothers is also an IAS soldier, while the other is an Indian Foreign Service diplomat.

Arora earned a bachelor’s degree (BA Honours) and a master’s degree (MA) in English from Panjab University in Chandigarh, which is located in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Sunil Arora was an associate professor at DAV College in Jalandhar before being named as an IAS officer.

Arora worked as an IAS officer for the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, holding positions such as Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Principal Secretary (Small Industries), Principal Secretary (Investment and Protocol), Chairman and Managing Director of the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation, Principal Secretary to the Chief Electoral Officer, and Principal Secretary to the Chief Electoral Officer.

On April 30, 2016, Arora retired from the military. Arora was re-employed into the IAS when he was appointed director general and chief executive officer of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs after retirement.

On August 31, 2017, Arora was appointed as one of India’s two Election Commissioners. On September 1, 2017, Arora was appointed as Election Commissioner. On November 26, 2018, it was announced that Arora will succeed Om Prakash Rawat as Chief Election Commissioner in December 2018.
