Sunil Bharti airtel Mittal was born on 23 October 1957. He is an Indian billionaire entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the founder and chairperson of Bharti Enterprises, which has diversified interests in telecom, insurance, real estate, education, malls, hospitality, Agri, and food besides other ventures.

Bharti Airtel, the group’s flagship firm, is one of the world’s largest and India’s second-largest telecommunications company with over 399 million customers in 18 countries across Asia and Africa. Bharti Airtel reported revenues of more than US$ 14.75 billion in 2016. He is listed as the 6th richest person in India by Forbes with a net worth of $11.6 billion. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor. On 15 June 2016, he was elected as Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce.

Sunil Mittal Biography:

Sunil Bharti Mittal was born in the family of Baniya. His father, Sat Paul Mittal, had been the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha (Indian National Congress) from Ludhiana, Punjab, he was elected from Punjab for two terms (1976 & 1982) and nominated to the Rajya Sabha once (1988). He first attended Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie, but later attended Scindia School in Gwalior, and in 1976 graduated from Panjab University, Chandigarh, with a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree from Arya College, Ludhiana. His dad died of cardiac arrest in 1992.

Career:

A first-generation entrepreneur, Sunil Mittal started his first business in April 1976 at the age of 18, with a capital investment of ₹20,000 (US$280) borrowed from his father. His first company was to produce crankshafts for local bike manufacturers.

In 1980, he and his brothers Rakesh Mittal and Rajan Mittal set up an import business called Bharti Overseas Trading Business. He sold his bicycle parts and yarn factories and went to Mumbai. In 1981, he purchased importing licenses from exporting companies in Punjab. Then he imported thousands of portable electric generators from Japan from Suzuki Engines. The import of generators was abruptly prohibited by the then Indian Government.

In 1984, he began to manufacture push-button phones in India, which he used to import from the Taiwanese firm, Kingtel, to replace the old fashioned, bulky rotary phones used in the country at the time. Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) was incorporated and entered into a technical relation with Siemens AG, Germany, for the manufacture of electronic push-button phones. In the early 1990s, Sunil was producing fax machines, cordless phones, and other telecommunications devices.

Sunil says, “In 1983, the government put a ban on the import of gensets. I was out of business immediately. Everything I was doing came to a screeching halt. I was in trouble. Then, the question was: what should I do next? Then, the opportunity came to call. While I was in Taiwan, I found the popularity of the push-button phone – something that India hadn’t seen before. We still used those rotary dials with no speed dials or redials. I sensed my chance and embraced the telecommunications market. I started selling phones, answering/fax machines under the brand name Beetel, and the business picked up really quickly. His first push-button phones were branded ‘Mitbrau.’

In 1992, he successfully applied for one of the four cell phone network licenses auctioned in India. One of the conditions for the Delhi Cell License was that the applicant had some experience as a telecommunications operator. So, Mittal made a deal with the French Vivendi Telecom Group.

He was one of the first Indian entrepreneurs to recognize the mobile telecommunications sector as a major growth field. His plans were finally approved by the Government in 1994, and he launched services in Delhi in 1995, when Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was established to offer cellular services under the brand name AirTel to businessman Leena Jaitley in 1997. Within a few years, Bharti became the first telecommunications company to have crossed the 2 million mobile subscribers mark. Bharti also raised the STD / ISD cellular levels in India under the brand name ‘India one.’

In May 2008, it emerged that Sunil Bharti Mittal was pursuing the idea of buying MTN Group, a South African telecommunications business with coverage in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East. The Financial Times announced that Bharti was considering offering US$ 45 billion for a 100% stake in MTN, the biggest overseas acquisition ever made by an Indian company.

However, both sides highlight the preliminary nature of the negotiations, while The Economist magazine said, “If anything, Bharti will marry,” as MTN has more subscribers, higher revenues, and wider geographic reach. However, the negotiations fell apart as the MTN group tried to reverse the negotiations by making Bharti almost a subsidiary of the new company.

In May 2009, Bharti Airtel again reported that it had been in talks with MTN and that the companies had agreed to negotiate the future transaction exclusively by 31 July 2009. The talks ended without agreement, with some reports claiming that this was due to criticism from the Government of South Africa.

In June 2010, Bharti, led by Mittal, purchased Zain Telecom’s African business for $10.7 billion (enterprise value), making it the largest acquisition ever made by an Indian telecommunications company. In 2012, Bharti joined forces with Wal-Mart, the US retail giant, to set up a range of retail stores across India. In 2014, Bharti agreed to purchase Loop Mobile for INR 7 billion, but the deal was later canceled. His son, Kavin Bharti Mittal, is the CEO and founder of Messenger.

In September 2010, Sunil Mittal’s uncle, Shravan Mittal, joined Bharti Airtel as manager of Merrill Lynch in New York City and Ernst & Young in London.

In 2012, Sunil Mittal took over Bharti Infratel public with an initial IPO that raised $760 million. He acknowledged that the offer, considered by many to be a modest success, was a “solid endorsement by eligible investors.” The Board was restructured ahead of IPO, with Mittal remaining Chairman and Managing Director. After the IPO, Bharti Infratel’s shares fell sharply at the beginning of trading.

In 2013, Mittal was ordered to appear before a special court in Delhi to answer questions about the additional allocation of airwaves to some firms. Allegations against Mittal say that there has been coordination with key government telecommunications officials to illegally secure an extra spectrum. No charges were brought against Mittal, but the judge of the court acknowledged that there was enough evidence in the record to proceed.

At the end of 2013, Mittal announced the acquisition of Warid Congo, making Bharti Airtel the largest telecommunications company in the Republic of Congo. In 2015, Sunil Mittal announced that he will join the board of OneWeb, an internet space company. Mittal was one of the investors in the $500 million investment round, including Coca-Cola, Virgin, and Qualcomm.

In 2016, Mittal made changes to Bharti Airtel to allow the company to compete against the launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. is India’s largest telecommunications firm. In 2017, Mittal declared the “Battle on Roaming” by abolishing charges for outgoing and incoming calls within India as well as international roaming charges.

Sunil Mittal has also worked to educate India through the Bharti Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises. The Foundation has founded schools in villages across India and provides free quality education with free books, uniforms, and mid-day meals for poor children.

Satya Bharti School Program – The Foundation’s flagship program operates 254 schools in six States serving more than 45.000 rural children, free of charge. Other educational programs, including the Satya Bharti Academy, Quality Support, and Learning Center, are currently reaching more than 350,000 underprivileged children in 11 states. The other program of the Foundation which has had a huge effect among the underprivileged sections is ‘Satya Bharti Abhiyan’ (Sanitation).

In 2017, the Bharti Family pledged 10% of its wealth (approx. Rs 70 billion) to Philanthropy to set up Satya Bharti University, a world-class university offering education to teenagers from economically poorer sections of society.
