T M Krishna was born on January 22, 1976, in Chennai, India, to T. M. Rangachari and his wife Prema Rangachari. In Anaikatti, Tamil Nadu, his mother and maternal uncle, Dr. Sriram Subramaniam, established and operated Vidya Vanam, a school for tribal and underprivileged children. Krishna is the grandson of T.T. Krishnamachari, a Congress politician and freedom fighter who was also a founder member of the Madras Music Academy.

Bhagavathula Seetharama Sharma was Krishna’s first musical tutor. Later, he was groomed in the Ragam Thanam Pallavi style by Chingleput Ranganathan.

Krishna’s performing career started when he was 12 years old, when he appeared at the Music Academy’s Spirit of Youth series (India).
