In the late ’60s, the Rolling Stones had already established a strong claim to the title of the world’s greatest rock and roll band. The Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that would come to characterize hard rock as the self-aware alternative to the Beatles’ buoyant Merseybeat during the British Invasion. While Keith Richards and Brian Jones laid the groundwork for sinewy, interlocking rhythm guitars, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman with his macho bravado and latent maliciousness.

The rhythm line of bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts made the Stones the breakout band of the British blues movement, eclipsing such contemporaries as the Animals and Them, with whom they had a rocky relationship. It wasn’t until they were a big hit in the United Kingdom that the Stones began to experiment with their style and incorporate the British pop of their contemporaries, such as The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Who.

They returned in the late 1960s as a hard-rocking band after a brief foray into psychedelic experimentation. It was only as the hippie dream crumbled that they discovered and celebrated the new rock culture that they had been flirting with all along. It wasn’t easy, but it was manageable. As soon as the band sacked him, Jones was found dead in the swimming pool. During a free concert at Altamont, the Stones savagely killed one of their audience members.

Even so, the Rolling Stones didn’t stop touring. While their records weren’t always blockbusters, the Stones were never less popular or productive than any of their British rivals over the next 50-plus years; no one else in the music industry was as successful as the Stones. Never before has a musical or artistic influence been so widely felt, and it is impossible to hear any of the bands that followed them without hearing a trace of their influence, musical or otherwise.

Keith Richards, on guitar, and Mick Jagger, on vocals, have been the backbone of the Rolling Stones for most of their existence. They first met in elementary school, where they were both attending Dartford Maypole County. It took them another ten years to re-connect, but they did so through a mutual friend, Dick Taylor, who was also attending Sidcup Art School at the time.

He was a student at the London School of Economics and a musician in the blues band Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys at the time of this meeting. Richards joined the group not long after that. Brian Jones (guitar, vocals), a Cheltenham native who had dropped out of school to play saxophone and clarinet, joined the band within a year. Prior to making his mark on the British blues scene, Jones had a turbulent personal life.

When he was 16, he had already had two children and fled to Scandinavia. After a few months away, he returned to Cheltenham and joined the Ramrods. After moving to London, Alexis Korner’s band, Blues Inc., hired him as a drummer. Ian Stewart, a blues pianist, was one of the members Jones hired when he decided to start his own band.

At the Ealing Blues Club, Jones also performed under the stage name Elmo Jones. While in the pub, he ran into Blues, Inc., which now included drummer Charlie Watts and occasionally featured appearances by Jagger and Richards, and rekindled his friendship with them. During this time, Jagger was elevated to the position of Blues, Inc.’s main singer by Jones and Richards; Taylor and Stewart soon joined them. The band created a demo recording with the help of drummer Tony Chapman.

They had their maiden show in London on July 12, 1962, at the Marquee Club. Jagger, Richards, Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Avory, and Dick Taylor, who had rejoined the band for a short time, formed the core of the group at the time. After the show, Taylor departed once more, and Bill Wyman, previously of the Cliftons, took his place. After Avory’s departure from the group, the Stones hired Tony Chapman, who proved to be ineffective.

A few months of persuading led to the band bringing back Charlie Watts, who had left Blues, Inc. to work at an advertising agency when the band’s schedule grew too demanding. During the eight-month tenure at the Crawdaddy Club in 1963, the Stones significantly expanded their fan base. Andrew Loog Oldham, who became the Stones’ manager after signing them from the Crawdaddy Club’s Giorgio Gomelsky, was also interested in the band.

Despite Oldham’s lack of musical knowledge, he was a talented promoter, and he embraced the concept of making the Stones the anti-Beatles band. By Stewart’s demand, he was expelled from the band due to his looks, which was in stark contrast to the other band members. Although Stewart left the band, he remained a major member of the Stones’ touring and recording staff until his death in 1985.
