A. R. A. R. Rahman was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on January 6, 1967. He attended Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan in Chennai for his education. He studied at Madras Christian College. He was awarded a scholarship by Trinity College of Music at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He changed his name from A. S. Dileep Kumar to A. R. Rahman after converting from Hinduism to Islam (Allahrakka Rahman). His family went through a difficult period as a result of his father’s early death. He was only 9 years old at the time, and he was given the responsibility of supporting his family. He was raised in a joint family.

He’d always been fascinated by electronic gadgets, particularly musical instruments. He started earning money by playing his father’s keyboard and later worked with celebrities such as Illaya Raja and Raj Koti. He received the 1st division on his board exams and aspired to be a computer engineer. However, due to the hardships of life, he began to follow in his father’s footsteps and began his musical training under Master Dhanraj. For operating a record player, he received 50 (INR) as his first salary.

A. R. Reihana, Fathima Rafiq, and Ishrath Qadri are his three sisters. He and his family converted to Islam from Hinduism in 1989, shortly after his sister was cured of a severe illness. It was all because of the blessings of a Pir Qadri named Sheik Abdul Qadir Jeelani, they claimed.

He got married to Saira Banu. It was a pre-arranged matrimonial union.

A. R. Rahman started his career with the band known as Roots (1984-88).

He played keyboard for 10/12 Kannada films in addition to being a member of this band. Later, he became a member of the rock band “Nemesis Avenue.”

He used to work as a producer-arranger in this band and also performed at the “Jive Live” concert. He began writing commercial jingles in 1987. His first break was for Alwyn’s new trendy watch line. In five years, he composed music for approximately 300 advertisements. Meanwhile, he collaborated on the album “Colours” with celebrities such as Shankar, Sivamani, and Zakir Hussain.

In 1991, he met acclaimed director Mani Ratnam through a producer named Sharada Trilok. Mani Ratnam was very impressed with Rahman’s work, and as a result, he got a break in the film “Roja” (1992).

He became a household name in India after his debut in “Roja.” He was named one of the world’s all-time top-selling recording artists in 2004 after selling nearly 200 million cassettes and 150 million recordings of his soundtracks. Even after achieving so much, he never stopped learning and improving his musical skills by receiving training in classical Hindustani, Carnatic, Qawwali, and Western classical music from masters such as Dakshinamurthy, N. Gopalakrishnan, Krishnan Nair, Nithyanandham, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Jacob John. In 1997, he collaborated with Sony Music to create the album “Vande Mataram” to commemorate India’s 50th anniversary of independence. It was Sony’s first album collaboration with a South Asian artist.

His music became a global phenomenon after branching out from Tamil to Hindi and then to English films. In 2007, he and Craig Armstrong composed music for Shekhar Kapur’s biographical drama film “Elizabeth: The Golden Age.”

In 2008, he composed the song “Jai Ho” for the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” for which he won the Oscar.

Later, Rahman composed the music for Vanessa Roth’s Netflix series “Daughters of Destiny.”

In addition, he is a global ambassador for the WHO’s “Stop TB Partnership” and promotes “Save the Child” in India. In addition, he is the first-ever brand ambassador of Sikkim.

This Oscar-winning composer is also Seychelles’ cultural ambassador for his contributions to the country’s art and culture development.

Rahman made his directorial debut in 2017 with “Le Musk,” an Indian virtual reality film starring Nora Arnezeder, Guy Burnet, Munirih Grace, and Mariam Zohrabyan.
