Amy Klobuchar Contact Address

Amy Klobuchar, full name Amy Jean Klobuchar, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2006 and began representing Minnesota the following year. She was the first woman elected to that body to serve the state. Klobuchar was born and raised in a Minneapolis–St. Paul suburb. Her father was a Star Tribune columnist, and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Klobuchar was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and went on to Yale University, where she earned a magna cum laude degree in 1982.

Her senior thesis, “Uncovering the Dome,” was later published as a book about the politics surrounding the construction of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis (1986). After graduating from the University of Chicago with a law degree in 1985, she worked as a legal adviser to former Vice President Walter Mondale, who encouraged her to pursue a career in politics. She married John Bessler around that time, and the couple went on to have a child.

Klobuchar was elected attorney of Hennepin County, whose county seat is Minneapolis, in 1998, and served in that capacity from 1999 to 2006. She was president of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association during that time. After it was announced that U.S. Senator Mark Dayton would not seek reelection, she ran for his seat on the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) ticket in 2006. She was elected in 2007 after defeating her Republican opponent by a large margin.

Klobuchar established herself in the Senate as a political liberal who voted with her party most of the time, though she did show a willingness to engage in bipartisan negotiations. She successfully negotiated a large funding package for the reconstruction of a highway bridge that had collapsed over the Mississippi River in August 2007. She also fought for a number of farm bills, as befitting an agricultural state, and was particularly interested in veterans’ issues. She was also involved in a major revision of the Senate’s ethics rules, as well as international commerce initiatives and efforts to improve funding for secondary and university science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.

Klobuchar received high marks for her office’s transparency. She was re-elected in 2012 and 2018 with ease in her home state, where she is extremely popular. Klobuchar announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 the following year. Klobuchar, who ran as a moderate, struggled to gain traction in the crowded field, and she dropped out in March 2020. She was later mentioned as a possible running mate for Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

However, the death of an African American man in Minnesota police custody has heightened attention to racial justice and raised questions about Klobuchar’s prosecutorial record. She withdrew her name from consideration in June 2020, saying that the vice presidential nominee should be a woman of colour. Sen. Kamala Harris was chosen by Biden in the end.

On November 3, Biden defeated Trump in the election. Despite the lack of evidence, Trump and other Republicans challenged the results, claiming widespread voter fraud. Klobuchar and other members of Congress met on January 6, 2021, to certify Biden’s victory, but the meeting was temporarily halted when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. The bloodbath lasted for several hours. Many people accused Trump of inciting the uprising, and on January 13, a week before his term ended, the House impeached him. In February, a Senate trial was held, and Klobuchar voted to convict Trump, but he was acquitted by a vote of 57–43.

Klobuchar is the author of several books, including The Senator Next Door (2015), a memoir, and Antitrust: Fighting Monopoly Power from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age (2021).
