Avril Ramona Lavigne is a singer, songwriter, and actress from Canada. She had performed on stage with Shania Twain by the age of 15, and by the age of 16, she had signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records worth more than $2 million.

Avril Lavigne Biography:

Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada in 1984. Her father named her Avril (the French word for the month of April). When Lavigne was two years old, he and her mother recognized her daughter’s vocal abilities and sang “Jesus Loves Me” on the way home from church. Lavigne has an older brother named Matthew and a younger sister named Michelle. “My brother used to hit on the wall because I used to sing myself to sleep, and he found it very annoying.” Jean-Claude Lavigne, their son, was born in 1954 at RCAF Station Grostenquin, near Grostenquin, Lorraine, France. Jean-family Claude’s relocated to Ontario, Canada, when he was a child, and he married Judith-Rosanne “Judy” Loshaw in 1975.

When Lavigne was five years old, the family relocated to Greater Napanee, Ontario, a town of about 5,000 people. She was sometimes escorted out of class for misbehaving in school. Her parents encouraged her to sing. Her father purchased a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, and several guitars for her and transformed their basement into a recording studio. Jean-Claude took the family to church at Third Day Worship Centre in Kingston, Ontario, where he frequently played bass. Lavigne’s parents took her to karaoke sessions when she was 14 years old.

Lavigne sang songs by Garth Brooks, the Chicks, and Shania Twain at country fairs. She started writing her own songs. Her first song, “Can’t Stop Thinking About You,” was about a teenage crush and was described as “cheesy cute.” Lavigne continued to play hockey into high school, where he was named MVP twice as a right-winger in a boys league.

Career:

Lavigne received a radio competition in 1999 to perform with Canadian singer Shania Twain in front of 20,000 people at the Corel Centre in Ottawa. Twain and Lavigne performed Twain’s song “What Made You Say That,” and Lavigne told Twain that she would become a “famous singer.” Lavigne was discovered by local folksinger Stephen Medd during a performance with the Lennox Community Theatre. He asked her to sing background vocals on his song “Touch the Sky,” which appeared on his 1999 album Quinte Spirit. In 2000, she sang on “Temple of Life” and “Two Rivers” from his follow-up album, My Window to You.

Let Go (2002) is Lavigne’s debut studio album. It is the best-selling album by a Canadian artist in the twenty-first century. It produced the singles “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi,” which promoted her skate punk persona and received her the title “Pop Punk Queen” from music magazines. She is regarded as a pivotal figure in the evolution of pop-punk music, having paved the way for female-driven, punk-influenced pop music in the early 2000s. Under My Skin (2004), Lavigne’s second studio album, became her first to top the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, selling 10 million copies worldwide.

The Best Damn Thing (2007), Lavigne’s third studio album, debuted at number one in seven countries and saw the international success of its lead single “Girlfriend,” which became her first single to top the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Goodbye Lullaby (2011) and Avril Lavigne (2013), her fourth and fifth studio albums, were both certified gold in Canada, the United States, and other territories. Head Above Water is Lavigne’s sixth studio album. It was released in 2019.

Aside from music, Lavigne has voiced Heather, a Virginia opossum, in the animated film Over the Hedge (2006) and made her screen acting debut in Fast Food Nation (2006).

Acting Career:

Lavigne became interested in starring in feature films and on television. She stated that she made the decision on her own. Although her years of experience in making music videos worked in her favor, Lavigne admitted that her singing experience helped her overcome any anxiety of performing in front of a camera. She stated that the video “Nobody’s Home” required the most “acting.” Her first television appearance was in a 2002 episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch when she performed “Sk8er Boi” in a nightclub with her band. She later appeared in the 2004 film Going the Distance as a cameo. After her performance of “Losing Grip,” the main characters run into her backstage at the MuchMusic Video Awards.

She took her first steps into feature film acting with caution, taking on small roles on purpose. After a successful audition, Lavigne traveled to New Mexico in November 2005 to film a single scene in the 2007 film, The Flock. She co-starred with Claire Danes and Richard Gere as Beatrice Bell, the girlfriend of a criminal suspect. ”  The Flock was not released in American theaters, and it was not released in foreign markets until late 2007. The film grossed $7 million at the international box office.
