Basavaraj Somappa Bommai is an Indian politician and engineer who was born on the 28th of January 1960. He served as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka from the 18th of July 2021 to the 19th of May 2023. As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he has previously served as the Interim Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Additionally, he has been a member of the Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United) in the past.
Since 2008, he has been elected to serve as a member of the Legislative Assembly in the Karnataka legislature representing the Shiggaon constituency. He has been elected from this constituency four times. Dharwad municipal authorities elected him to serve in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1998 till 2008. He served in that capacity until 2008. Beginning in 2008 and continuing until 2013, he held the position of Minister for Water Resources and Major and Medium Irrigation.

He won a seat in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Shiggaon constituency in the Haveri district during the elections that took place in the state of Karnataka to elect representatives.
It was believed that he was a close assistant to B. S. Yediyurappa, who was serving as Chief Minister at the time. The Bharatiya Janata Party was the party that he joined after he quit the Janata Dal (United) in February 2008. Following the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic that occurred in Karnataka, Bommai, in his capacity as Home Minister, implemented stringent lockdown laws.
To put less strain on the Shiggaon taluk hospital, Bommai transformed his home in Shiggaon, which is located in the Haveri district, into a Covid Care Centre that could house up to fifty patients.
