Blackpink is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of participants Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group made its debut in August 2016 with its single album Square One, which included the number-one singles “Whistle” and “Boombayah” in South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, respectively.

Throughout their career, Blackpink has cracked numerous online records. Their music videos for “Kill This Love” (2019) and “How You Like That” (2020) both broke records for the most-viewed music video in the first 24 hours of release, with the latter breaking three and setting two Guinness World Records.

Career:

After starting its first major girl group, 2NE1, in 2009, YG Entertainment held tryouts worldwide for preteen or teenage recruits to create a new girl group, Blackpink.

On June 1, Jennie was revealed as the first member of the group. After returning to South Korea from New Zealand, she joined YG Entertainment as a trainee in 2010. On April 10, 2012, she was introduced to the public for the first time in a photo titled “Who’s that girl?” on YG Entertainment’s website.

On June 8, 2016, Lisa was announced as the new girl group’s second member. She was the only one of 4,000 applicants to pass the 2010 YG Entertainment audition in her home country of Thailand, and she became the label’s first foreign trainee in 2011. She first appeared in a video titled “Who’s That Girl???” on YG Entertainment’s YouTube channel in 2012.

Jisoo was declared as the new group’s third member on June 15. In her pre-debut years, she worked as a trainee for YG Entertainment and appeared in many advertisements and music videos, including “Spoiler + Happy Ending” (2014) from Epik High’s studio album Shoebox and Hi Suhyun’s music video “I’m Different” (2014). She also appeared in the 2015 drama The Producers as a cameo.

On June 22, 2016, Rosé was the final member to be introduced. She came in first place out of 700 applicants in the 2012 YG Entertainment audition in Australia, after which she signed a trainee contract with the label and relocated to Seoul to start her training.

On June 29, YG Entertainment announced that the new girl group would have four members rather than the initially planned nine, and the group’s official name would be Blackpink.

Teaser images, videos, and advertisements were released in the first week of August 2016 to promote their debut. Blackpink, the first girl group to launch under YG Entertainment in seven years, released their debut single album, Square One, on August 8, 2016, which included the songs “Boombayah” and “Whistle.”

Blackpink’s first live concert performance aired on SBS’s Inkigayo on August 14, 2016. On November 1, 2016, Blackpink released their second single album, Square Two, which included the songs “Playing with Fire” and “Stay.”

On January 17, 2017, Blackpink introduced the name of their fan club, “Blink,” a combination of the words “black” and “pink.”

On January 6, 2018, Blackpink released the first episode of their first reality show, Blackpink House, which consisted of 12 episodes released throughout 2018 following the four members’ 100-day vacation as they relocated into their new dorm, via their official V Live and Youtube channels.

Blackpink announced additional tour dates for their In Your Region World Tour in November 2018, which included thirteen dates across Asia from January to March 2019.

On February 9, 2019, Blackpink made their American debut at the Universal Music Group’s 2019 Grammy Artist Showcase, an invite-only event at the ROW in Downtown Los Angeles. On October 16, 2019, a Japanese version of Kill This Love was released, peaking at number 17 on the Oricon Albums Chart.

On April 22, it was announced that the group would be partnering with Lady Gaga on a track titled “Sour Candy” for her sixth studio album, Chromatica, which would be released as a promotional single on May 28, 2020.

On October 2, 2020, Blackpink released their first Korean studio album, The Album, with “Lovesick Girls” as the third and lead single. Prior to the exclusive video debut of their music video for “Lovesick Girls,” Blackpink made an appearance on YouTube’s new original music show. As its first featured artist, the group’s “unfiltered access” moments were released.

On December 2, Blackpink announced its first live stream concert collaboration with YouTube Music. The live event, dubbed “The Show,” was originally scheduled for December 27, 2020, but it was rescheduled to January 31, 2021, due to new COVID-19 pandemic regulations implemented in South Korea. Many songs from The Album, as well as Rosé’s song “Gone” from her first solo single album -R-, were performed for the first time at the concert. It was later revealed that over 280,000 people bought memberships to watch the show.
