NFL team Buffalo Bills, based in Buffalo, New York, competes in the American Football Conference (AFC) and is a member of the National Football League. During their time participating in the American Football League (AFL), the Buffalo Bills won two league titles (1964 and 1965). They also made it to four straight Super Bowls (1991–94), losing all four times.

The Bills were one of the original eight American Football League (AFL) franchises (1960). Even though they finished dead last in their first two seasons, adding quarterback Jack Kemp and punishing running back Cookie Gilchrist in 1962 helped the squad turn things around. After winning the AFL’s Most Valuable Player award that year, Gilchrist went on to run for 243 yards in one game, a league record. When he was in his first full season with the franchise in 1963, Kemp led the Bills to the playoffs.

Next year, the Bills went 12-2, finishing first in both offence and defence in the American Football League. Last but not least, the Buffalo Bills won their first NFC Championship in franchise history by defeating the San Diego Chargers. The Bills beat the Chargers again in the AFL championship game in 1965, and they returned in 1966, but this time they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs and were denied admittance into the inaugural AFL-NFL World Championship Game (now called the Super Bowl).

After that, the Bills went on a losing streak that included a 1–12–1 record in 1968, which earned Buffalo the first overall pick in the 1969 NFL draught (the two leagues had a combined draught for three years prior to their merger in 1970), which is used to select running back O.J. Simpson. While playing for the Buffalo Bills, Simpson broke numerous NFL rushing records, including the league’s first 2,000-yard season in 1973, but the team only made the playoffs once during his tenure with the team, which was known as “The Electric Company” because they “turned on the Juice,” a reference to Simpson’s nickname. For a few seasons after trading Simpson to the San Francisco 49ers in 1978, the Bills remained a mirage, but in 1980 they made their first of two straight postseason appearances.

In the first round of the 1983 NFL draught, the Buffalo Bills selected quarterback Jim Kelly. Buffalo’s 1984 and 1985 league records were 2-14 thanks to Kelly’s decision to play in the fledgling United States Football League (USFL). Kelly joined the Bills in 1986 after the USFL disbanded due to his NFL rights being maintained.

As a result, head coach Marv Levy implemented the “K-Gun” offence (named after quarterback Kelly) that relied on quick passes and runs out of the shotgun position. While the Buffalo Bills’ offence, which included future Hall of Famers Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed, was among the most prolific in the league, their defence was led by legends Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett, two all-time greats. Five of those playoff visits were for division titles, and the Bills had a number of noteworthy postseason performances during that time period.

As a result of a last-second field goal attempt by Buffalo’s Scott Norwood that went wide right, the Bills made it to their first Super Bowl in 1991. Buffalo went back in the Super Bowl the following year, but this time it lost to the Washington Redskins. In the 1992 Wild Card round, the Bills trailed the Houston Oilers 35–3 early in the third quarter while playing without an injured Kelly. Buffalo beat the Oilers 41–38 in overtime behind backup quarterback Frank Reich’s five unanswered touchdowns.

There has never been a comeback of this magnitude in the NFL’s regular season or postseason games. The Bills’ winning ways continued in the AFC playoffs, as they cruised to a 2-0 record and a trip to their third straight Super Bowl. But the Dallas Cowboys thrashed them 52-17 in Dallas. Even though the Bills made it to their record-tying fourth straight Super Bowl in 1994, their rematch with the Cowboys resulted in yet another heartbreaking loss. Despite making two more postseason trips in the mid-1990s, the Bills were eliminated in the second round each time, and several important players from the team’s 1990s dynasty left after that.
