Def Leppard is an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitars, backing vocals), and Vivian Campbell have been in the band since 1992. (guitars, backing vocals). They rose to prominence as part of the early 1980s British heavy metal movement’s new wave.

In the early 1980s and the early 1990s, the band had the most commercial success. Their first album, On Through the Night, was released in 1980 and reached the Top 15 in the United Kingdom, but gained little attention elsewhere. Mutt Lange produced their second album, High ‘n’ Dry, in 1981, which helped them establish their melodic, hard rock style. The album’s most famous single, “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak,” became one of the first rock videos broadcast on MTV in 1982, but the album only reached the UK and US Top 30 and 40. Pyromania, Def Leppard’s next studio album, was released in January 1983, with the singles “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages” topping the US Rock Tracks chart and reaching the Hot 100’s Top 20. Pyromania debuted at No. 2 on the US album chart and was certified Diamond in the United States and 7x Platinum in Canada. It also charted in the Top 20 in the United Kingdom, but did not sell well elsewhere.

Hysteria (1987), Def Leppard’s fourth album, topped the charts in the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and Norway. It also charted at No. 2 in Sweden and No. 10 in Germany, despite the fact that neither country had any Top 50 singles. It has been certified 12 platinum in the United States and 13 platinum in Canada, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album spawned six Top 20 US singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Love Bites” (which also reached the Top 10 in many other countries, including No. 2 in New Zealand), “Pour Some Sugar on Me” (US No. 2), “Hysteria”, “Hyster (a Top 15 hit in many countries). In New Zealand, Hysteria had four Top 10 tracks.

Adrenalize (their first studio album after guitarist Steve Clark’s death) debuted at No. 1 in the UK, US, NZ, Canadian, and Australian charts in 1992, while also reaching the Top 10 in Sweden and Germany. It included a number of hits, including the US Rock Tracks chart-topper “Let’s Get Rocked,” which went to No. 2 in the UK, No. 3 in Canada and Switzerland, and Top 20 in Sweden and Germany. The third single, “Have You Ever Needed Anyone So Bad,” reached the Top 15 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Retro Active, their 1993 album, featured the acoustic Top 5 North American hit “Two Steps Behind.” Vault, their greatest hits album, was released in 1995 and included the UK No. 2 hit “When Love & Hate Collide.” It charted in many countries and was certified 5x platinum in the United States. Between 1996 and 2008, Def Leppard released five albums, the majority of which reached the Top 15 in many countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. The band’s most recent album, self-titled, was released in 2015 and reached the Top 15 in a number of countries.

Def Leppard is one of the best-selling music artists in the world, having sold over 100 million records worldwide and two albums with RIAA diamond certification: Pyromania and Hysteria, making them one of just five rock bands with two original studio albums selling more than 10 million copies in the United States. The band was ranked No. 31 in VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”and has two albums with RIA

In 1977, Rick Savage, Tony Kenning, and Pete Willis, all Tapton School students in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, developed Atomic Mass. Willis on guitar, Savage on bass guitar after briefly playing guitar, and Kenning on drums were the original members of the band. Joe Elliott, who was just 18 at the time, auditioned for the band as a guitarist after running into Willis while missing a bus in November 1977. During his audition, it was determined that he was best qualified to be the lead singer. The band’s first rehearsals were held at Portland Works, and their first performance was in the dining hall of A Block in Mosborough, Sheffield .

Elliott suggested the name “Deaf Leopard,” which was initially a band name he thought of while creating band posters in art class. The pronunciation was slightly changed at Kenning’s suggestion to make the name sound less like that of a punk band. Steve Clark joined the band in January 1978. Elliott claims that he successfully auditioned for the band by performing the entire song “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd .

Kenning suddenly quit Def Leppard in November, just before recording sessions for a three-song EP known as The Def Leppard E.P.; he later founded the band Cairo. Frank Noon took his place for those sessions. Rick Allen, who was just 15 years old at the time, had joined the band as a full-time drummer by the end of the month. After renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who was considered at the time to be a champion of punk rock and new wave music, gave the track “Getcha Rocks Off” substantial airplay, sales of the EP skyrocketed.

Throughout 1979, the band gained a loyal following among British hard rock and heavy metal fans, and was regarded as one of the forerunners of the new wave of British heavy metal.Their increasing success led to a record contract with major label Phonogram/Vertigo (Mercury Records in the US). After Martin and Joe Elliott got into a fistfight on the lane, Def Leppard’s original management, MSB, a local duo consisting of Pete Martin and Frank Stuart-Brown, were fired. The band contacted Peter Mensch of Leber-Krebs management, who had booked them on an AC/DC support tour in the United Kingdom. Mensch, who confessed to having a crush on the band, was hired as their manager.
