Digvijaya Singh is an Indian politician belonging to the Congress party. He is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He is also presently a General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party’s All India Congress Committee. He had served as the 14th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, a central Indian state, for two terms from 1993 to 2003. He is also known as the new “Arjun Singh” by political leaders.


Having lost the assembly elections of 2003, Digvijay had taken an oath that he will not take part in any election for a period of 10 years. After being absent from the political theater for 10 years, Digvijay was in the news for his accusations against the BJP in 2013. Digvijaya Singh was born on February 28, 1947, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Daly College, Indore. He completed graduation in Mechanical Engineering (B.E.) at the Shri GovindramSeksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSTI), Indore. He got married to Asha Digvijaya Singh. The couple has a son and four daughters. His wife lost her life on February 28, 2013, due to Cancer. He confirmed that he was in a relationship with a Rajya Sabha TV anchor Amrita Rai in April 2014. They married in late August 2015. He is a Hindu.

Digvijaya Singh was president of the Raghogarh Nagar Palika between 1969 and 1971. In 1970, Vijayaraje Scindia’s offer to join Jana Sangh was not accepted and he subsequently entered the Congress Party. In the 1977 elections, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) as a party candidate for the Raghogarh Vidhan Sabha electoral district of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

This was the same electoral district that his father won as a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1951 as an independent candidate for the Raghogarh Vidhan Sabha electoral district following the 1951 elections. Digvijaya was later re-elected from the Raghogarh constituency and became Minister of State and then Minister of State in the Madhya Pradesh state government, headed by Arjun Singh, whom he called his mentor, between 1980 and 1984.


Digvijaya Singh was president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee between 1985 and 1988, having been nominated by Rajiv Gandhi, and was re-elected in 1992. In the 1984 Indian general election, he was elected as a member of the 8th Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India, representing the Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency. He was the first Congress lawmaker to win the electoral district created in 1977.

Having won the contest by 150,000 votes, Pyarelal Khandelwal of the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) lost 57,000 votes in the 1989 general election. He recovered it in 1991, becoming a member of the 10th Lok Sabha.
