Kanimozhi Karunanidhi is an Indian politician, poet, and journalist who was born on January 5, 1968. She is a member of the Lok Sabha (India’s lower house of parliament), representing the Thoothukkudi constituency. Kanimozhi is the daughter of M. Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and his third wife Rajathi Ammal, who represented Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha (India’s Parliament’s upper chamber).
Kanimozhi is a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in India, where she is the head of the DMK’s Art, Literature, and Rationalism wing and is regarded as her father’s “literary heir.” M. K. Alagiri and M. K. Stalin, her half-brothers, are former Union Ministers of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers, respectively.
Kanimozhi worked in journalism before entering politics, serving as a sub-editor for The Hindu, editor in charge of Kungumam (a Tamil weekly magazine), and features editor for Tamil Murasu, a Singapore-based Tamil newspaper.
Kanimozhi came up with the concept for the Chennai Sangamam, an annual open Tamil cultural festival that takes place during the Pongal season.
She leads the DMK’s attempts to organize job fairs in rural Tamil Nadu under the title ‘Kalaignar 85,’ to help young people in smaller cities, towns, and villages find work. Job fairs, which began as a local employment push to commemorate DMK President Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s birthday in June 2008 at Kariyapatti (a village in Virudhunagar District), have now supplied employment to almost 1,33,000 unemployed youth in nine districts. Cuddalore, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Udhagamandalam, Vellore, and Virudhunagar have all hosted it. She intends to hold such fairs throughout Tamil Nadu.
Kanimozhi collaborated with Bombay Jayashri on the film Silappadikaram, A Woman of Substance, which is based on a Tamil epic of the same name.
Kanimozhi attended Presentation Convent in Church Park, Chennai, and then earned a master’s degree in economics from Madras University’s Ethiraj College for Women. She married Athiban Bose, a businessman from Sivakasi, in 1989 (they are now divorced), and then G. Aravindan, a Singapore-based Tamil writer, in 1997. Aditya Aravindan is her son’s name.
Kanimozhi was nominated by the DMK as one of the party’s Rajya Sabha candidates in May 2007. In 2013, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the second time. Kanimozhi was the DMK’s house leader and the Upper House’s representative for the state of Tamil Nadu.
She was elected as the first female MP from Thoothukkudi in the 17th Lok Sabha, which was held in 2019, and she was also elected as the DMK’s deputy leader of the parliament. Kanimozhi is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers as of September 2019.
She is the president of the employees’ union of The Hindu National Press.
She is the secretary of the DMK Women’s Wing and promotes women’s participation in politics. She has organized training sessions for women’s wing district office-bearers. She also organized a rally in Delhi to demand that the parliament enact the Women’s, Reservation Bill.
