DMK MK Stalin is the 8th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is an Indian politician. He is the son of M. Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
DMK MK Stalin was born on 1 March 1953, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Stalin is the third son of M. Karunanidhi, the second Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the leader of the DMK, and his wife, Dayalu Ammal. On March 1, 1953, Stalin was born in Madras, now Chennai. Karunanidhi was speaking at a memorial service for Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, who died only four days after his son was born, and chose to name his son Stalin.
In Madras, India, Stalin attended Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. After finishing a pre-university study at Vivekananda College, he got a history degree from Presidency College, Chennai, of the University of Madras in 1973. M. K. Stalin received Honorary Doctorates from Anna University on August 1, 2009. Stalin, like his father, has said publicly that he is an atheist.
On August 25, 1975, Stalin married Durga (alias Shantha) and they had two children. Udhayanidhi Stalin, an actor and politician, is his son.
At his early childhood, he and a group of friends started the DMK Gopalapuram Youth Wing in a tea shop. When he was 14 years old, he campaigned for his uncle, Murasoli Maran, in the 1967 elections. In 1973, Stalin was elected to the General Committee of the DMK.
In 1976, he was imprisoned in Madras Central Prison under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for demonstrating against the Emergency. He was beaten up in captivity, and while guarding him, fellow DMK prisoner C. Chittibabu died of injuries and police abuse. While inside, he completed his BA examinations. The DMK youth branch was founded by Stalin. Stalin became the DMK’s youth wing secretary in 1982, a position he maintained for over four decades.
Stalin ran for the Assembly from Chennai’s Thousand Lights seat, but lost. Stalin ran for the Assembly again in 1989, this time from the Thousand Lights Constituency, and won. However, the DMK administration was forced to resign in 1991 before serving out its entire five-year mandate. He ran for the same Assembly seat for the third time, but was defeated by Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. Stalin was elected to the Thousand Lights seat as an MLA for the second time in 1996.
For the first time in his political career, Stalin switched constituencies in 2011, relocating from Thousand Lights to Kolathur on the outskirts of Chennai. In 1996, Stalin was chosen as the city’s first directly elected mayor. He privatised the city’s conservancy operations and built nine flyovers, as well as a pet project dubbed Singara Chennai, which has been praised for upgrading Chennai’s infrastructure. Managara Thanthai is the local name. In 2001, Stalin was re-elected mayor. However, in 2002, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa passed the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Act, which prohibits a person from holding two elected government positions.
This rule was applied retrospectively to Stalin’s case in what was generally perceived as an attempt to depose him as mayor of Chennai. The Madras High Court, on the other hand, overturned the statute, holding that legislative bodies were not “prevented” from passing laws impacting people’s “substantive rights” in the future. The court did rule, however, that a person cannot serve as mayor for two consecutive terms under the Madras City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, despite the fact that, unlike Stalin, past mayors were not directly elected. Stalin did not file a Supreme Court appeal. Stalin was appointed Deputy General Secretary of the DMK in 2003.
The DMK recovered control of the state legislature in the 2006 Assembly Elections, thanks in part to Stalin’s efforts. Stalin was appointed Minister of Rural Development and Local Administration by the Tamil Nadu government, a position he held during his term. During his time there, he honed his administrative abilities by assisting in the strengthening of self-help organisations around the state. He became DMK’s treasurer in 2008.
Governor Surjit Singh Barnala nominated Stalin for the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 29, 2009. Karunanidhi declared Stalin as his heir apparent on January 3, 2013, putting an end to a long-running debate about who would lead the party following Karunanidhi’s death.
On August 8, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled M.K. Stalin and spoke a few words with him during M. Karunanidhi’s burial in Chennai.
Stalin embarked on a nationwide tour called Namakku Naame to appeal to the young during the 2016 Assembly election. Stalin was elected as the opposition leader after winning the Kolathur seat. Stalin embarked on another Namakku Naame tour in 2017. His father, Karunanidhi, died in 2018, leaving Stalin as the DMK’s president.
M.K. Stalin founded the Secular Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu, which was part of the national United Progressive Alliance, and led the coalition in the state’s general election in 2019. With 52 percent of the vote, the Secular Progressive Alliance won 39 out of 40 Parliament seats and 12 out of 21 Assembly seats in the by-election. It was his first victory since becoming President of the DMK.
Stalin spearheaded the campaign for the Secular Progressive Alliance in the 2021 Assembly elections. They gained 159 seats out of a total of 234, giving the DMK an absolute majority of 132 seats. On May 7, 2021, Stalin and the rest of his government took their oaths as chief ministers.
