Kim Dong-young is also known as Doyoung. He is a South Korean singer, actor, and host. He is known primarily for being a member of the South Korean boy band NCT and its subunits NCT U and NCT 127. Doyoung began his career in April 2016 as a member of rotational unit NCT U, and in January 2017 he became a member of Seoul-based fixed unit NCT 127.

Kim Dong-young was born in Guri, Gyeonggi, South Korea on February 1, 1996. He is actor Gong Myung’s younger brother.

Career:

2013-2015: Pre-debut

After being scouted at a singing competition, Doyoung became a trainee through SM Entertainment’s Casting System in late 2013.

On January 15, 2015, Doyoung was presented as a member of SM’s pre-debut training team, SM Rookies as he became an MC on MBC Music’s Show Champion alongside fellow SM Rookie, Jaehyun. From January 21 to July 1, 2015, they organized the show. Prior to formally becoming a public trainee. He performed H.O.T’s “Hope” with Johnny, Jaehyun, and EXO Chen for EXO’s variety show EXO 90:2014 in August 2014.

2016–2018: Debut with NCT & solo activities

Doyoung, along with five other members of the SM Rookies program, were revealed by SM Entertainment in April 2016 to debut as members of NCT and its first sub-unit, NCT U. On April 9, Doyoung premiered with the digital singles “The 7th Sense” with Taeyong, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark, and “Without You” with Taeil and Jaehyun on April 10.

Doyoung partnered with Shinee’s Key on the song “Cool” for the soundtrack of the OCN drama 38 Squad in July 2016. This was his first solo project since making his debut with NCT.


In November 2016, he joined the main cast of Lipstick Prince, OnStyle’s beauty variety show.

He was declared as a new member of NCT 127, the second sub-unit of NCT that premiered in July, in December 2016, and his official debut occurred in January 2017, with the launch of the EP Limitless. As part of SM Town, he also took part in the SM Station project “Sound of Your Heart” with fellow NCT member Taeil and labelmates Yesung, Sunny, Seulgi, Wendy, and Lee Dong-woo.

In February 2017, he joined Inkigayo as an MC alongside Jinyoung of Got7 and Jisoo of Blackpink. He appeared on the MBC show We Got Married in March of the same year as a result of his brother’s appearance on the show.

In August 2017, he and fellow NCT members Taeil and Taeyong released “Stay in My Life” for the School 2017 soundtrack.

In October 2017, he partnered with Gugudan’s Sejeong on “Star Blossom,” which was released as part of the second season of SM Station.

He released the song “Hard for Me” for the drama Rich Man in June 2018. “Hard for Me” was originally performed by CHEEZE and was the first song released for the drama, but Doyoung later re-recorded it.

2019-present: Further solo activities

In March 2019, he partnered with indie duo Rocoberry on the song “Don’t Say Goodbye.”

In July 2019, Doyoung debuted on King of Mask Singer as “Assistant Manager.” The following month, he was introduced to the regular cast of Law of the Jungle in the Sunda Islands.


Doyoung partnered up on the song “This Is Your Day” with labelmates BoA, Siwon, J-Min, Sunny, Taemin, Suho, and Wendy as part of SM Town in November 2019.

SM declared in September 2020 that NCT would release their second full album as a group, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1, with the second part, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2, following in November. Doyoung was the only member to appear in both title tracks from the first album, “Make a Wish” and “From Home,” making him the only member to appear in both songs. Doyoung had also taken part in the B-sides “Volcano,” “Lightbulb” (both B-sides and title tracks released through NCT U), and “Music, Dance” in addition to the given tracks. Doyoung, along with the other vocalists in the group, had participated in the B-side track, I.O.U, on the following Resonance album.

Doyoung made his television debut as the lead in Midnight Cafe Season 3 – The Curious Stalker in March 2021.

On April 19, 2021, it was revealed that Doyoung had been cast in his first musical, Marie Antoinette, as Count Axel von Fersen, the male lead. The role, as with other musicals, is shared by three other actors, who alternate performance dates due to scheduling conflicts. The musical will be performed at the Charlotte Theatre from July 13 to October 3.
