Eiichiro Oda is a Japanese manga artist best known for his work on the One Piece manga series (1997–present). One Piece is the best-selling manga and comic series of all time, with over 480 million tanks on copies in circulation worldwide, making Oda one of the best-selling fiction authors. Oda was designated one of the manga artists who changed the history of manga as a consequence of the series’ prominence.

Eiichiro Oda Biography:

Eiichiro Oda was born in Kumamoto, Japan on January 1, 1975. He stated that he decided to become a manga artist at the age of four in order to avoid having to get a “real job.” Akira Toriyama and his Dragon Ball series have had the most influence on him. He recalls that the famous TV animation series Vicky the Viking sparked his curiosity in pirates. He proposed Pandaman as a character for Yudetamago’s classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman appeared not only in a chapter of the manga but also as a recurring cameo character in Oda’s own works.

Eiichiro Oda married Chiaki Inaba. She was a former model, actress, and “race queen” who had played as Nami during the Jump Festa festival, and the young woman took part in “One Piece spectacle stage performances” in December 2002 at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, where Oda met her during one of these performances. Inaba was born in Kanagawa, Japan on January 4, 1978. Eiichiro’s wife retired from modeling and performance after her wedding in 2004. Chiaki became pregnant around 2005, after nearly two years of marriage, and gave birth to Oda’s first daughter in 2006, at the age of 28. Oda and Inaba invited their second daughter in 2009 when their firstborn was only three years old. Oda lives apart from his wife, Chiaki, and daughters due to his demanding work schedule, with visits from them about once a week. During the holidays, he usually pays a visit to their house.

Masashi Kishimoto was described by Oda as both a friend and a rival. Oda included a hidden message and other tributes in the art for the title page depiction of One Piece chapter 766, which appeared in the 50th matter of Weekly Shonen Jump in 2014 alongside the final two chapters of Kishimoto’s Naruto.

A woman was arrested in 2009 for sending approximately one hundred threatening messages to Oda between September and December 2007. The woman’s husband had been fired as an assistant in Oda’s office.

Oda gave Kumamoto Prefecture 800 million yen (the US $8 million) in 2018 after the prefecture was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2016 that damaged its iconic Kumamoto Castle. Oda’s 800 million yen donation was offered in two separate gifts, one for 500 million yen in Luffy’s name and the other for 300 million yen. Eiichiro Oda has long been a supporter of earthquake-affected areas, writing encouraging messages, creating artwork for local products, and taking part in the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project.

Career:

Oda submitted his work Wanted! at the age of 17 and received multiple awards, including second place in the prestigious Tezuka Award. He was given the name Kikondo Tsukihimizu, which roughly translates to Thufrisat Montuewed in Japanese. Surnames are usually given before first names. That landed him a job at Weekly Shnen Jump magazine, where he began as an assistant manga artist/assistant to Shinobu Kaitani’s series Suizan Police Gang before moving on to Masaya Tokuhiro’s series Jungle King Tar-chan and Mizu no Tomodachi Kappaman, which had an unexpected influence on his artistic style. He started working as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin at the age of 19, before winning the Hop Step Award for new manga artists. Watsuki credits Oda for helping to create the character Hong Kamatari from Rurouni Kenshin.

During this time, Oda created two pirate-themed one-shot stories called “Romance Dawn,” which were published in late 1996 in Akamaru Jump and Weekly Shnen Jump, respectively. The protagonist of “Romance Dawn” was Monkey D. Luffy, who later became the protagonist of One Piece.

One Piece started serialization in Weekly Shnen Jump in 1997 and has since become not only one of Japan’s most famous manga series but also the best-selling manga series of all time. By February 2005, it had sold 100 million gathered tank on volumes, over 200 million by February 2011, had 320,866,000 copies printed worldwide by December 2014, 430 million volumes in circulation worldwide as of October 2017, 440 million copies sold as of May 2018, and 450 million in print as of March 2019.

Furthermore, individual volumes of One Piece have broken Japanese publishing records. In 2009, Volume 56 had the highest initial print run of any manga, with 2.85 million copies printed. Volume 57’s first print run of 3 million in 2010 was the highest for any book in Japan, not just manga. A record that was cracked many times by subsequent volumes and is currently held by 67’s initial printing of 4.05 million in 2012. The series, along with Kimuchi Yokoyama’s Nekodarake Nice, awarded the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award Grand Prize in 2013.

Oda was voted the fifth most popular manga artist in Japan in a 2008 poll conducted by marketing research firm Oricon. Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of YuYu Hakusho and Hunter Hunter, shared the space with him. Oda was ranked fourth in their 2010 poll of the Mangaka Who Changed the History of Manga.

Oda formed the story for the tenth One Piece animated theatrical film, Strong World, drew over 120 drawings for guidance, and insisted Mr. Children provide the theme song. Furthermore, a special chapter of the manga was produced and included in the tank on volume 0, which was distributed free to filmgoers and also contained his drawings for the film.
