Gautam Gambhir is an Indian politician and former cricketer who has represented his country in all formats of the game. He has been a Lok Sabha member since 2019.

Gambhir was born in New Delhi. His father’s name is Deepak Gambhir and his mother’s name is Seema Gambhir. Gambhir has a sister named Ekta. Gambhir was adopted by his grandparents eighteen days after his birth and has since lived with them. Gambhir began playing cricket at the age of ten. He attended Modern School in New Delhi and graduated from Hindu College at the University of Delhi. In the 1990s, he stayed at his maternal uncle Pawan Gulati’s house. Gambhir regards Gulati as his mentor and frequently calls him up before important matches. Sanjay Bharadwaj of the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy in Delhi and Raju Tandon coached Gambhir. In the year 2000, Gambhir was chosen for the first intake of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Gambhir married Natasha Jain, a member of a prominent business family, in October 2011. He currently resides in the Rajendra Nagar neighborhood of Delhi.


Career:

Domestic Career:

Gambhir had a good start to 2008. At home, he scored an unbeaten 130 to help Delhi defeat Uttar Pradesh by nine wickets in the Ranji Trophy final, just two days before the team for the ODI tournament in Australia was to be announced.

Indian Premier League:

Gambhir was signed by the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the Indian Premier League’s first player auction for US$725,000 per year. With 534 runs from 14 matches, he became the inaugural season’s second-highest run-scorer.

Gambhir was the most popular after player in the 2011 IPL player auction, fetching a bid of $2.4 million from The Kolkata Knight Riders, making him the highest-paid cricketer in IPL history. He was then named as the team’s captain.

He was purchased by the Delhi Daredevils for 2.8 crores in the 2018 IPL Auction on January 27, 2018, and was named captain. Later, Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore revealed that Gambhir had requested that the team not retain him because he wanted to finish his IPL career where he began. On April 25, Gambhir resigned as captain of the Delhi Daredevils, citing poor team performance, and Shreyas Iyer was named as the team’s new captain.


Retirement:

Gambhir quit his job from all forms of cricket on December 3, 2018, just days before his final Ranji Trophy match for the Delhi cricket team against the Andhra cricket team on December 6, 2018. Gambhir went on to score 112 runs in his final innings, his 43rd first-class century. Gautam Gambhir started his new chapter as a parliamentarian on June 17, 2019, when he took the oath of office as a Lok Sabha MP.

Politics:

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 22, 2019, in the presence of Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad. In the 2019 Indian general election, he was the party’s candidate from East Delhi. After his opponent, Atishi Marlena, challenged him to a debate, Gambhir declined, stating that he does not believe in “dharnas and debates.” Gautam defeated Atishi Marlena and Arvinder Singh Lovely by 695,109 votes.

Other Work:

Gambhir has begun work in his East Delhi constituency, installing CCTV cameras to address the issue of women’s safety that has plagued Delhi in recent years. He is also the Pinnacle Specialty Vehicles Brand Ambassador for Pinnacle Industries.

Controversies:

1. In 2007, during the third ODI against Pakistan in Kanpur, he got into a verbal spat with Shahid Afridi after colliding with him.

2. During an Asia Cup in 2010, Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal made a loud appeal against Gambhir, which enraged him, and they got into a heated argument, but umpires and players intervened to stop them.

3. During an IPL 6 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knightriders in 2013, Gambhir and Virat Kohli got into an argument. Instead of walking back, Kohli made some remarks that enraged Gambhir, and the two began abusing each other until Rajat Bhatia intervened.

4. In 2017, cricketer Gautam Gambhir discovered that two Delhi pubs, Ghungroo and Hawalat, owned by Gautam Gambhir (the pub owner with the same name as cricketer Gautam Gambhir), had purposefully used cricketer Gambhir’s name as a tagline. Cricketer Gambhir, who is a teetotaller, was irritated and sent numerous requests, including a legal notice. However, after receiving no response from the pub’s owner, he filed a complaint against them. The Delhi High Court barred the pub owner from using his name as their tagline in January 2018.
