Greta Thunberg, full name Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg (born January 3, 2003 in Stockholm, Sweden), is a Swedish environmental activist who founded the Fridays for Future campaign in 2018 to combat climate change (also called School Strike for Climate).

Greta was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a form of autism that is now classified as a spectrum disease (ASD). It is distinguished by problems in social interactions (as in classic autism), but normal cognitive and language development. Asperger syndrome causes people to focus intensely on a single concept or interest, and Thunberg’s cause was climate change. She initially became aware of the problem when she was about eight years old, and within a few years, she had changed her lifestyle, becoming a vegan and refusing to fly. (Little animals and aeroplanes both contribute to global warming by emitting significant amounts of greenhouse gases.)

Thunberg aimed to persuade MPs to address climate change in order to have a stronger influence. She skipped school for approximately three weeks leading up to the Swedish election in September 2018 to sit outside the country’s parliament with a sign reading “Skolstrejk för Klimatet” (School Strike for Climate). Despite being alone on the first day of the strike, she was joined by more and more people each day after that, and her tale gained international attention. Thunberg returned to school after the election, but continued to strike on Fridays, which became known as Fridays for Future. Hundreds of thousands of students throughout the world were inspired by her action to hold their own Fridays for Future. Strikes took place in Belgium, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, France, and the Netherlands, among other nations.

Thunberg has been asked to speak on climate change on a number of occasions. She spoke at the Davos World Economic Forum, the European Parliament, and the legislatures of Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Her impassioned remarks at a UN climate summit in New York City in September 2019 garnered particular attention because she came there on an emissions-free yacht: “You have taken my aspirations and my youth with your meaningless promises… We are on the verge of a catastrophic extinction, and all you can talk about is money and endless economic growth fairy tales. While Thunberg’s influence was acknowledged with influencing some people’s ideas and behaviours on climate change (dubbed “the Greta effect”), she was not without critics. In 2019, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro famously referred to her as a “brat.”

Thunberg was praised with promoting awareness about Asperger’s syndrome and motivating those who had the disease, in addition to her environmental activities. While she admitted that Asperger’s has limited her in certain instances, she also emphasised its benefits, tweeting at one point, “I have Aspergers and that means I’m occasionally a bit different from the usual.” And being different may be a superpower in the appropriate circumstances.” Her remarks are collected in No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference (2019). I Am Greta, a documentary, was released in 2020.

Documentary film is a motion picture that uses factual material to shape and interpret it for educational or entertainment reasons. Documentaries have been produced in some form or another in practically every country, and they have played an important role in the development of realism in film. In the mid-1920s, the phrase was derived from the French word documentaire by John Grierson, a Scottish educator who had studied mass communication in the United States. The documentary-style film, on the other hand, had been popular from the dawn of cinema. The Bolshevik ascension to power in 1917–18 was filmed in Russia, and the images were utilised as propaganda. Nanook of the North, a firsthand observational record of Eskimo life that was the pattern for many documentary films, was released in 1922 by American director Robert Flaherty. Around the same time, H. Bruce Woolfe, a British director, reconstructed World War I battles in a series of compilation films, which are a sort of documentary that builds an interpretation of history on true news footage. International demand for German Kulturfilme, such as the feature-length film Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit (1925; Ways to Health and Beauty), was high.

Films like Grierson’s Drifters (1929), a portrayal of the British herring fleet, and Night Mail (1936), about the nightly mail train from London to Glasgow, affected international cinema creation in the 1930s, thanks to the British documentary film movement founded by Grierson. The United States contributed much to the genre as well. The Plow That Broke the Plains (1936), set in America’s dust bowl, and The River (1937), a topic of flood control, are two early examples directed by Pare Lorentz.
