Charli D Amelio is a dancer and social media celebrity from the United States. In May of this year, D’Amelio debuted on TikTok with a lip-syncing video with a buddy. In July 2019, she released her first viral video, a side-by-side video with user “Move With Joy.” Her material has mostly comprised of videos of her dancing to popular songs on the site since then.
In October 2019, she got more attention for her videos doing the “Renegade” dance to the K Camp song “Lottery,” and she was wrongly attributed with popularising the dance on social media, as well as being referred to as the “CEO of Renegade” by TikTok users. After a New York Times article on dancer Jalaiah Harmon revealed her as the dance’s original inventor, D’Amelio faced outrage for not acknowledging Harmon, prompting her to start crediting individuals who developed the dances she performs on a daily basis. In November 2019, she and her sister, Dixie, joined The Hype Company, a joint TikTok content house.
Her family signed with United Talent Agency in January 2020. Bebe Rexha, a singer, requested D’Amelio to perform with her at the Jonas Brothers’ inaugural show in November 2019. She started blogging on her self-titled YouTube vlog channel the same month.
In October 2020, D’Amelio featured in the music video for Bebe Rexha’s single “Baby I’m Jealous.” She was nominated for three prizes at the 10th Streamy Awards later that month, including Creator of the Year, and teamed with mobile banking service Step for a promotional campaign immediately after its launch, subsequently becoming an investor in the business a month later.
D’Amelio became the first person to reach 100 million TikTok followers in November 2020. She was also nominated for the 46th People’s Choice Awards in the category of Social Star. In December 2020, D’Amelio launched her first book, Essentially Charli: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping It Real. She was also featured in an episode of the Facebook Messenger series Here for It With Avani Gregg, and at the 10th Streamy Awards, she earned the Breakout Creator award.
In April 2021, she appeared in the music video for Lil Huddy’s song “America’s Sweetheart.” D’Amelio and her sister co-founded and became the faces of Hollister’s Social Tourist fashion line in May 2021, and collaborated with Simmons Bedding Company to design and market the Charlie & Dixie x Simmons Mattress in June 2021.
In 2021, D’Amelio will feature in the Hulu docuseries The D’Amelio Show with her family and in the Snap Originals reality series Charli vs. Dixie with her sister.
