How to Meet Dolly Parton Personally and Face to Face

Dolly Parton is a singer and songwriter from the United States. She’s most recognised for her work in country music. Parton began singing on local radio and television programs in East Tennessee when she was a youngster. By ten o’clock, she appeared on WIVK Radio and WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee, on The Cas Walker Show.

At the age of 13, she was recording for Goldband Records, a tiny Louisiana company, and performing at the Grand Ole Opry, where she met Johnny Cash, who urged her to pursue her own professional inclinations.

Parton’s first album, Hello, I’m Dolly, was released in 1967, and it was a commercial and chart success throughout the rest of the 1960s, until her sales and chart peak occurred in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. Parton’s records did not sell as well in the 1990s, but she regained financial success in the new century and has produced albums on a variety of indie labels, including her own Dolly Records, since 2000.

For “Travelin’ Thru,” which she composed particularly for the feature film Transamerica, Parton received her second Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. (2005) Parton got death threats as a result of the song’s embrace of a transgender woman. It was followed by the studio album Backwoods Barbie, which debuted at number two on the country chart on February 26, 2008.

The album debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 albums list, which was her biggest debut in her career. Backwoods Barbie released four more singles, including the title tune, which was created for 9 to 5: The Musical, a stage adaptation of her feature film.

Parton released Dolly, a four-CD box collection, on October 27, 2009, with 99 songs spanning her whole career. In October 2009, she released Live From London, her second live DVD and album, which was shot during her sold-out 2008 shows at London’s O2 Arena. Parton released the album Brother Clyde with old friend Billy Ray Cyrus on August 10, 2010. Parton confirmed the title of her upcoming album, Better Day, on January 6, 2011. She announced in February 2011 that she will begin her Better Day World Tour on July 17, 2011, including performances in northern Europe and the United States.

Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, a made-for-TV film based on Parton’s song of the same name and including Parton’s narration, premiered on NBC in December 2015, starring child actress Alyvia Alyn Lind as the young Parton. Parton again appeared in the sequel, which was released in November of 2016. In the musical film Joyful Noise (2012), she co-starred alongside Queen Latifah as a choir director’s widow who joins forces with Latifah’s character, a mother of two teenagers, to preserve a tiny Georgia town’s gospel chorus.

Parton launched an eight-part Netflix series on her music career in June 2018. She is both an executive producer and a co-star in the film. Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, the show, premiered in November 2019.

The NPR podcast Dolly Parton’s America is about Parton. Jad Abumrad, who also hosts Radiolab, is the host. The biographical documentary Here I Am was added to the Netflix streaming service’s repertoire in December 2019. The Netflix and BBC co-production derives its title from a 1971 song by Dolly Parton.
