From 2014 to 2018, the band was listed as one of the top five most influential celebrities in Korea on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list, and they have been dubbed “Kings of K-pop” and “World’s Biggest Boyband” by different media publications.

Exo-K and Exo-M, two sub-groups of the band, debuted with twelve members. In 2014 and 2015, Kris, Luhan, and Tao all left the group due to legal issues. Until the release of their third EP Overdose in 2014, Exo-K and Exo-M played songs in Korean and Mandarin, respectively. Exo has only performed as a single group since 2015 while continuing to record and perform music in different languages.

In 2016, members Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin debuted as the Exo-CBX sub-unit, and in 2019, members Sehun and Chanyeol debuted as the Exo-SC sub-unit. Each member also has their own music, film, and television ventures.

Exo’s debut album, XOXO (2013), was a critical and financial success when it was released alongside the breakout song “Growl.” It sold over one million copies, making Exo the first Korean act to do so in twelve years.

Their following efforts did well as well, with each of their Korean studio albums selling over a million copies. Exo’s sixth album, Don’t Mess Up My Tempo (2018), debuted at number 23 on the US Billboard 200 and went on to become the group’s best-selling album in South Korea, selling over 1.9 million copies.

Exo has received several honours during their career, including five consecutive Mnet Asian Music Awards Album of the Year awards and two consecutive Melon Music Awards Artist of the Year awards, and has performed over 100 performances over four headlining tours and various collaborative tours.

Outside of music, the members of the band have endorsement deals with businesses like Nature Republic and Samsung, and also take part in charitable activities like Smile For U, a long-running collaboration between SM Entertainment and UNICEF that started in 2015.
