Gordon Ramsay is a chef, restaurateur, television personality, and author from the United Kingdom. He relocated to London and began polishing his culinary abilities at Harvey’s under chef Marco Pierre White and La Gavroche under chef Albert Roux. Ramsay moved to France in the early 1990s, where he cooked classic French cuisine in the kitchens of renowned chefs Jol Robuchon and Guy Savoy. Ramsay moved to London in 1993 to take over as head chef of Aubergine, which had received two of the Michelin Guide’s maximum three stars by 1996.
In 1993, Ramsay went it alone as the head chef of the newly established Aubergine in London, where he earned the restaurant a Michelin two-star rating over the course of three years. In 1995, Ramsay was named Newcomer of the Year at the prestigious Catey Awards, which are similar to the Oscars but for the restaurant and hotel industry.
Ramsay quit Aubergine and launched his own restaurant, Business Gordon Ramsay, in London in 1998 after the restaurant’s financial backing grew uncertain. The restaurant finally acquired a three-star Michelin certification after being hailed as a destination for high-end diners. When he won the ‘Independent Restaurateur of the Year’ award in 2006, he became just the third person to win three ‘Catey’ awards, the UK hospitality industry’s most prestigious honour.
With reality television in full swing in the United States, Ramsay decided it was time to make the leap across the Atlantic. In May 2005, FOX premiered an American version of Hell’s Kitchen, which pitted prospective restaurateurs against the show’s host. As the aggressive chef reduced the field of competitors down to one final winner, American fans came to love and detest him, just like their British counterparts. Meanwhile, he created The F Word, a new culinary series in the United Kingdom.
Ramsay has published more than 20 books in addition to his work on television and at his restaurants. Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited has combined his many companies. As a result, American versions of MasterChef (2010) and MasterChef Junior (2013) were produced, with Ramsay as the main judge. In 2012, he added another event to his calendar, Hotel Hell, which was a spin-off of his “rescue a failing institution” concept.
The ‘Restaurant Gordon Ramsay’ on Royal Hospital Road in London is known for its impeccable food and service. The restaurant’s food has been described as “classic cookery” that is “sophisticated, well-edited, and flavor-first.” For the past eight years, ‘Harden’s’ has voted the restaurant as London’s best. It was replaced in 2008 by ‘Petrus,’ a restaurant operated by Marcus Wareing, a former protégé of Ramsay. He was honoured into the ‘Culinary Hall of Fame’ in 2013.
