Justin Trudeau is a Canadian politician who has served as the country’s prime minister since November 2015 and as the Liberal Party’s leader since 2013. Trudeau, the oldest son of Pierre Trudeau, is Canada’s second-youngest prime minister after Joe Clark. He is also the first to be the child or other related of a former prime minister.
He was elected to the House of Commons to represent the Papineau riding after a successful campaign in the 2008 federal election. In 2009, he was the Liberal Party’s Official Opposition critic for youth and multiculturalism, followed by citizenship and immigration the following year. He was named a critic for secondary education and sport in 2011.
In April 2013, Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal Party, and he led his party to victory in the 2015 federal election, increasing the Liberals’ seat total from 36 to 184, the greatest numerical increase by a party in a Canadian federal election.
During his first term as Prime Minister, he pursued major government initiatives such as legalising recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act, attempting Senate appointment reform through the establishment of the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and establishing the federal carbon tax, all while dealing with ethics investigations involving the Aga Khan affair and later, the SNC-Lavalin affair.
Trudeau’s government negotiated trade agreements such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, as well as signing the Paris Climate Agreement.
Trudeau earned a second term by forming a minority government after winning the most seats (157) in the 2019 federal election, despite the Liberal Party losing the popular vote and obtaining the lowest percentage of the national popular vote of any governing party in Canadian history.
He has faced the COVID-19 epidemic in Canada, imposed an assault weapons prohibition in reaction to the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, and been exonerated of guilt after a third ethics inquiry during the WE Charity controversy during his second term. In international policy, he was the driving force behind Canada’s unsuccessful quest for temporary membership in the United Nations Security Council in 2020.
