John McCain, full name John Sidney McCain III, was a United States senator who was the Republican Party’s presidential contender in 2008 but was defeated by Barack Obama. He was born on August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone, and died on August 25, 2018, in Cornville, Arizona. McCain served in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987 before being elected to the United States Senate from 1987 to 2018.

McCain’s Senate record was largely conservative on most topics, including military expenditures, labour reform, abortion, and gun regulation. Aside from campaign finance reform, McCain took positions on specific issues that set him apart from the conservative Republican establishment in Washington. Despite spending years in captivity in Vietnam, McCain was a major champion for reestablishing diplomatic relations with the country, which was finally accomplished in 1995. He spearheaded failed efforts to put a new federal tax on tobacco products that would fund anti-smoking campaigns and assist states in covering the expenses of smoking-related health care.
