Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is a prominent member of the Indian National Congress and an Indian politician. He is also a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, representing the Guna Constituency. He is a nominal Maharaja of Gwalior because he is a descendant of the former royal Scindia family that ruled in Gwalior. He was a Union Cabinet Minister in Manmohan Singh’s government in addition to being an influential Congress leader.
Jyotiraditya Scindia Biography:
Jyotiraditya Scindia was born on January 1, 1971, in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, into the royal Scindia family. His grandfather, Maharaja Jivajirao Scindia, was the last Maharaja of Gwalior, which joined the Dominion of India in 1947. He was granted the same titles and privileges as other Indian princes. As a result, his family still holds the titular title of Maharaja. He attended Campion School in Mumbai for his primary education and Doon School in Dehradun for his secondary education. He attended Harvard University for his higher education and graduated in Economics in 1993. Scindia earned his MBA in 2001 from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
His father’s name is Madhavrao Scindia and his mother’s name is Madhavi Raje Scindia. His father was a politician and a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) who served as the Minister of Civil Aviation in P. V. Narasimha Rao’s government.
His mother, Madhavi Raje Scindia, is the daughter of Nepalese prince Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana.
Chitrangada Raje Scindia, his sister, married Vikramaditya Singh, prince of Kashmir, on December 11, 1987.
On December 12, 1994, he married Priyadarshini Raje Scindia. His wife is from the Baroda Princely State.
The couple has two children: Mahanaryaman Scindia (son) and Ananya Scindia (Daughter).
Career:
He joined the Indian National Congress on March 18, 2001, after the death of his father, Madhavrao Scindia, the sitting MP from Guna, on September 30, 2001. Jyotiraditya Scindia was elected to the Lok Sabha from Madhya Pradesh’s Guna constituency in 2002. In the 2004 Lok Sabha election, he defeated Harivallabh Shukla and was re-elected to the House. He was appointed to the Union Cabinet as Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology in 2007. He was appointed Minister of State for Commerce and Industry after winning his third consecutive term in the 2009 Lok Sabha election.
Scindia was appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power in a Cabinet reshuffle in 2012. Scindia was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014 after defeating BJP’s Jaibhansingh Pawaiya.
Scindia is the President of the Scindia School Board of Governors in Gwalior. His great-grandfather, Madho Rao Scindia, founded the school in 1897 to educate India’s princes and nobles. He has served as the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association’s chairman (MPCA).
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he lost the Guna seat to the BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh Yadav. He resigned from the Indian Congress on March 9, 2020, and joined the BJP on March 11, 2020.
Controversies:
1. Scindia filed a legal claim against his late father’s property, which is estimated to be worth Rs.20,000 crore. He claimed to be the sole heir, but this was also challenged in court by his aunts.
2. Jyotiraditya Scindia filed a legal notice against BJP leader Nand Kumar Singh Chouhan over allegations that a hospital in Madhya Pradesh initiated by Dalit BJP MLA Gopilal Jatav was sanctified by sprinkling “Gangajal” just before Scindia’s visit to the hospital. The BJP called the action an “insult to the Dalit community.”
